Notes from underground

Reports of chess tournaments are usually about what’s going on in the playing hall. At least as interesting is what’s going on in the press room, where this year at Corus the ediorial team of Chessvibes has access for the first time. The press room of a large chess tournament is considered by many to be the santum sanctorum, the Holy of the Holies, when grandmasters and players give their divine opinions and where you can learn more in one hour than from a year of studying. full story »

Press conference: Topalov beats Anand

Suddenly the game was over. The journalists didn’t immediately know what was going on, and some even doubted if the ‘1-0′ on the television screen was correct. But indeed, Anand lost quickly today and as it appeared, without much chance. Topalov is now topping the field of the Corus Chess Tournament. What exactly happened today, can be seen in Topalov’s press conference below, that he gave afterwards. Because everything went so quickly, we didn’t manage to get the camera in position in time, but we didn’t miss much. full story »

Also the eighth round has one top match on the program: Topalov-Anand. The Indian can’t really afford a defeat anymore and Topalov naturally likes to join Radjabov in the lead. The two gentlemen are fighting it over the board in a Queen’s Indian. Ponomariov surprised Van Wely with a Knight’s Tango, Tiviakov again played a Accelarated Dragon (this time against Shirov), Radjabov-Aronian have the Ragozin Variation of the Queen’s Gambit Declined, Kramnik-Carlsen a Catalaan, Motylev-Svidler a very sharp 3.f3 Grünfeld and the Marshall Declined again joined the party, in Karjakin-Navara. full story »

A game from group B

After six rounds young Ian Nepomniachtchi is still the proud leader of Group C. After his victory against Edwin van Haastert yesterday, he has totalled his score to 5,5. A fabulous performance which gives him a gap of 1,5 points. I am curious who is going to stop this train from Russia. In group B the differences are so much smaller where every round starts with a new leader. full story »

Live reporting: round 7

Again a top match is on the program today, in the seventh round, that has started. Naturally we’re talking about Anand-Radjabov, a Sveshnikov that for 22 moves followed other games. The theoretical novelty is 22…Qg5, where 22…Qd8 was played in a Karjakin (with White) game in 1998. 22…Be6 was Kasparov’s choice in the same year in his game against Topalov, in Leon, where computer help was allowed. Press conference: the world champion teaches

It’s getting more and more crowded in Wijk aan Zee, and in the press room as well. Many journalists decided to visit this great tournament, of course. This you will notice in the video as again somebody (the same person!) hits the camera and this time many photographers move before the camera. Since we’re working for Corus, the organizers will try to do something about that next time. But cut the crap; what we’re offering is simply unique. The world champion teaching an endgame lesson. Live reporting: round 6

Well, we’re in the mood and we start again with the live reporting of what’s already the sixth round. And we see some great play bills today. What to think of Kramnik-Anand (a Catalan - today Genna Sosonko is here too so at least he’s having a nice day) or the clash between the national Dutch champs of 2005 and 2006, Van Wely-Tiviakov. Again KingLoek plays the English Opening, just like in June this year (when he lost) and Tiviakov is the first to deviate, with his 12…Nd4 instead of 12…a5. And Magnus Carlsen plays a sharp line against Motylev’s Spanish Four Knights. full story »
