Magnus Carlsen seems ready for Monaco. In March the yearly rapid and blindfold tournament Melody Amber will take place there, and this weekend a Scandinavian group of four played a blindfold tournament as a preparation for Magnus, on the island of Funen, Denmark. His co-participants were the GM’s Peter Heine Nielsen and Emanuel Berg and the strong IM Steffen Pedersen. Carlsen won the mini tournament by beating his own second Heine Nielsen in the final. Akopian succesful too

After the nice (shared) victory of Levon Aronian in Wijk aan Zee, his compatriot Vladimir Akopian started the year 2007 successfully as well. He took clear first place at the tournament in Gibraltar (7,5 out of 9) after a quick victory over Kuzubov in the last round. Areshchenko, Nakamura and Sutovsky didn’t do badly either with 7 out of 9. Read more

There it is. The Big Chessvibes Interview with Anatoly Karpov. Wednesday morning I spoke to him about half an hour in The Hague, where he was to play a simul later that day against members of the Dutch parliament. (By the way, the score was 21 wins and 2 draws for the ex-world champion). The questions I asked him, were put forward in advance by you, the visitors, on the Chessvibes website. (Because we were limited by the clock, not all questions could be asked.) This way I think we managed to make it an interview with a nice mix of subjects that are interesting for a broad audience. Chessvibes poll: rule draw offer should be changed

According to the visitors of Chessvibes the current rule about the draw offer should be changed, to fight short draws. The majority (59%) likes to either allow a draw offer only after a certain amount of moves, or not to be allowed at all. This is the result of the current Chessvibes poll (in the grey column) about the draw offer, which is similar to the current suvey of the Association of Chess Professionals for their members and title holders.
