Hungarian GM Jozsef Pinter spent many years in compiling his new book, clearly a labor of love and extreme devotion to the game of chess.

[lang_nl]Vorige week ging onze redacteur Manuel Weeks even langs bij het Europees Kampioenschap in Dresden. Hier is een verslag van zijn hand, inclusief lekker veel foto’s.

Het Europees Kampioenschap is een groot succes voor de organisatoren. Het vindt plaats van 2 tot en met 16 april 2007 in het Internationaal Congres Centrum dat in het centrum van de stad staat zodat de spelers de rivier kunnen zien terwijl ze spelen. Het evenement is een elfrondig Zwitsers toernooi met het nieuwe officiële FIDE-speeltempo van 90 minuten voor 40 zetten plus 30 minuten voor de rest van de partij, met een increment van 30 seconden per zet vanaf zet één. Dit werd onlangs voorgesteld door de ACP nadat het eerdere snelle speeltempo van 90 minuten plus 30 seconden increment afgekeurd was door de meeste spelers.[/lang_nl][lang_en]Last week our editor Manuel Weeks dropped by at the European Chess Championships in Dresden. The European Chess Championships is proving a great success for the German organizers. Taking place from April 2nd to 16th, 2007 in the International Congress Center located in the center of town with participants able to play while looking at the river. The event is an 11 round Swiss, with time controls at the new FIDE official control of 90 minutes for 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with an increment of 30 seconds per move, starting from move one. This was suggested by the ACP after the previous faster time control of 90 minutes plus 30 second increments was condemned by most players as too fast.[/lang_en] Read more

Het zijn de dubbele namen zoals dat gebruikelijk is in Spaanstalige landen, en deze drie staan voor de winaars van het Open Mexicaans Kampioenschap 2007. Tenminste, Corrales Jimenez was de echte winnaar, op weerstand. De grote favoriet Lazaro Bruzon kwam niet verder dan een zevende plaats in dit negenrondige toernooi dat de afgelopen week plaatsvond. We kregen van de toernooiorganisatie niet onaardige foto’s opgestuurd, zoals dat de laatste tijd wel vaker gebeurt. Steeds meer toernooiorganisatoren weten ChessVibes te vinden; iets waar we natuurlijk erg blij mee zijn.[/lang_nl][lang_en]Corrales Jimenez, Leon Hoyos and Gonzalez Garcia, that sounds nice. These double names, common in Spanish speaking countries, stand for the three winners of the Mexican Open Championships 2007. Well, the real winner was Corrales Jimenez, on tiebreak. The big favourite was Lazaro Bruzon but he finished only at the 7th place in this nine round Swiss that was played last week. The tournament organizers have sent us photos - something that now occurs quite often. [lang_nl]Alexei Shirov heeft tijdens het Festival Villa de Cañada de Calatrava het rapidtoernooi gewonnen. Hij pakte de eerste prijs op weerstandspunten voor Daniel Fridman, Ivan Sokolov en Boris Gelfand, die eveneens op 7,5 uit 9 waren geëindigd. Een spannend toernooi dus, waar mensen als Polgar, Mamedyarov en Anand gedeeld vijfde werden. Shirov verdiende het wel een beetje want hij liet weer enkele juweeltjes zien, die hem toch echt het alleenrecht geven op de titel Fire on Board.[/lang_nl][lang_en]At the Festival Villa de Cañada de Calatrava Alexei Shirov has won the rapid tournament. [lang_nl]Gisteren werd alweer voor de veertiende keer het Boerenkool Met Worst Toernooi gehouden. Dit is meteen al het goede nieuws, want het toernooi was bijna niet doorgegaan. Aangezien de oude speelzaal in Nibbixwoud afgelopen jaar is omgebouwd tot wokresutaurant, moest de organisatie uitwijken naar Wadway. Bij aankomst werd ons meteen maar het slechte nieuws verteld: omdat er zo laat in het seizoen gespeeld werd (het toernooi is meestal begin maart) kon er geen boerenkool geserveerd worden! Deze groente heeft net als Brusselse spruitjes vorst nodig om tot bloei te komen zeg maar, en het heeft natuurlijk al een tijd niet meer goed gevroren. In de wijde omtrek was geen boerenkool meer te krijgen! Maar, zo werd ons verzekerd, we zouden wel degelijk een echte West-Friese maaltijd geserveerd krijgen.[/lang_nl][lang_en]Yesterday for the 14h time the Boerenkool Met Worst Tournament was played (boerenkool = kale). This is already the good news, because the tournament was almost canceled. The old playing hall in the West-Frisian town Nibbixwoud was turned into a wok resutaurant this year and so the organisation had to move a few kilometres away to Wadway. On the arrival the bad news was told: because the tournament was played so late in the season, (usually it’s being held early March) no kale could be served! This vegetable, like Brussels sprout, needs frost to grow, so to speak, and we didn’t have very cold nights in Holland lately. So no fresh kale could be found in any supermarket in the country! But, the kitchen assured us, we would definitely be served a true West-Frisian diner.[/lang_en] Read more

[lang_nl]Niks te doen op Goede Vrijdag, of eigenlijk dit hele paasweekeinde? En doe je niet mee met het gezelligste toernooi van de hele Nederlandse schaakkalender? Dan heb ik goed nieuws voor je. Vele topspelers zitten namelijk in Spanje een rapidtoernooi te spelen (op dit moment al) en de partijen zijn uitstekend live te volgen. Ik heb het over het Festival Villa de Cañada de Calatrava. Onder de spelers zien we namen als Anand (die staat vrij hoog op de nieuwe FIDE-lijst), Mamedyarov (hoe goed zou hij in rapid zijn?), Gelfand (zit nog altijd goed in zijn openingen zagen we in Monaco), Ivanchuk (is nog altijd hardstikke goed zagen we in Monaco), J. Polgar (wow, die hebben niet meer zien spelen sinds… Hoogeveen?), Grischuk (wow, die hebben we sinds eeuwen niet zien spelen) Bacrot (oja, die is ook zo goed), Shirov (altijd fijn om naar te kijken) Sasikiran (doet die niet in Sofia mee?), Milov (zo’n speler die je steeds open toernooien in verweggistan hoort winnen) en… Karpov! [lang_nl]De Australische IM David Smerdon, over wie we al vaak schreven (hier en hier bijvoorbeeld), begon eind januari aan een reeks toernooien met als doel het scoren van een volgende GM-norm (hij had er al één op zak). In Gibraltar, Moskou en Cappelle la Grande wilde het niet lukken maar vorige week was hij zeer succesvol bij het Bangkok Chess Club Open. Hij werd ongedeeld eerste en pakte zijn tweede grootmeesterresultaat met een half punt overscore. Voor ChessVibes analyseerde David zijn cruciale partij tegen de Filipijnse GM Antonio. Bovendien verklaart hij het geheim achter zijn succes.[/lang_nl][lang_en]The Australian IM David Smerdon, who appeared on this site a couple of times before (e.g. here and here), started playing many tournaments as from January with the aim to score another GM result (he already had one). Ontzettend veel remises werden er gespeeld vandaag, maar vanwege het grote aantal deelnemers staan er nog altijd 34 GM’s op de volle honderd procent. Top seed Jakovenko won eenvoudig met een koningsaanval die u en ik ook hadden kunnen bedenken maar misschien niet hadden gedurfd tegen een 2500-speler? Slecht begonnen (met 0 uit 2) zijn de GM’s Maiwald, E. Lutz, Azmaiparashvili, Kovalev, Zezulkin en Gallagher.[/lang_nl][lang_en]A quick update on the second round of the European Championship. Lots of draws were played today, but because of the huge number of participants there are still 34 GMs on a hundred percent score. Top seed Jakovenko won easily with a kingside attack you and I could have played, but perhaps wouldn’t have dared against a 2500 player? Bad start (0 / 2) for the GMs Maiwald, E. [lang_nl]Vanwege de hapering in Dresden even wat kalendertrivia. Chess Today wijst de schaakfans erop dat vandaag precies vijftien jaar geleden Samuel Reshevsky stierf. Vrolijker is het dat de legendarische Hongaarse schaker Lajos Portisch vandaag de mooie leeftijd van zeventig jaar bereikt. In de jaren zestig en zeventig behoorde hij tot de absolute wereldtop. Hij was een vaste gast in de interzonale toernooien en plaatste zich maar liefst vijf keer voor de cyclus om het wereldkampioenschap. Voor Hongarije speelde hij mee in twintig (!) Olympiades en won met zijn land in Buenos Aires 1978, waar Portisch 10 uit 14 scoorde.[/lang_nl][lang_en]Because of the Dresden hitch, now for some calendar trivia. More happy news On a happier note legendary Hungarian chess player Lajos Portisch celebrates is 70th birthday today. In the sixties and seventies he belonged to the world elite, playing many interzonals and qualifying for the world championship title no less than five times.
