Turkish Chess Federation vs European Chess UnionWe received a letter from Ali Nihat Yazici, the President of the Turkish Chess Federation, concerning a recent arbitration in the court of Lausanne about an organizing dispute between the European Chess Union and the Turkish Chess Federation. Yazici’s letter speaks of justice, but to us, it seems only chaos prevails. A down-to-earth perspective is badly needed. Read more

Nalchik R12: Leko joins Aronian in the lead

r12While Aronian got luckily away with a draw, Leko punished Kasimdzhanov for his bad performance. In the last round, starting two hours earlier today, Aronian and Leko will fight out in a direct confrontation who will be the winner of the 4th Grand Prix in Nalchik. Video added. Read more

r11Levon Aronian and runner-up Peter Leko both did their job by drawing their black games in the eleventh round in Nalchik and therefore nothing significantly changed in the standings. Because Ivanchuk and Gelfand won their games, the rest of the field has become very tight. With two rounds to go, Leko may want to try hard with White against Kasimdzhanov, since in the last round he has Black against Aronian. Video added. Read more

Nalchik R10: Petroff finally loses

r10Did someone say „Black is hot“? In round 10 of the Grand Prix he was not! The players with the black pieces only scored one draw out of six games plus another draw out of a non-game. Even the Petroff only scored 25 percent. As a result, Aronian is still in sole lead, now half a point ahead of Leko. Video added. Read more

For me, this moment came when I discovered the Gr?ºnfeld Defence. Here, finally, was a chess opening in which it was possible to create some of the rich dynamics usually reserved for playing with White. I remember xeroxing whole books on this great opening in the Max Euwe Centre in Amsterdam. This also made me discover another property of the Gr?ºnfeld: it’s a highly professional opening.
