Tal Memorial starts Wednesday with Carlsen, Kramnik & Anand as top seeds

One of the strongest chess tournaments of 2013 is starting tomorrow: the Tal Memorial. The top seeds are Magnus Carlsen (2864, Norway), Vladimir Kramnik (2803, Russia) and Viswanathan Anand (2786, India) so it will surely be a memorable event. The tournament is held in the memory of the 8th World Champion, Mikhail Tal. Here's a preview with all the necessary information.
The 8th Tal Memorial will be held June 12-23, 2013 in Moscow, Russia. The tournament is a 10-player round robin with the following players:
- Magnus Carlsen (Norway, 2864)
- Vladimir Kramnik (Russia, 2803)
- Viswanathan Anand (India, 2786)
- Hikaru Nakamura (USA, 2784)
- Sergey Karjakin (Russia, 2782)
- Fabiano Caruana (Italy, 2774)
- Alexander Morozevich (Russia, 2760)
- Boris Gelfand (Israel, 2755)
- Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Azerbaidjan, 2753)
- Dmitry Andreikin (Russia, 2713)
The opening ceremony (including blitz tournament, see below) will be held on Wednesday, June 12th and the first round is on Thursday, June 13th. The rest days are June 16th and June 20th. The last round is on June 23rd.
The time control is 1 hour and 40 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 50 minutes for the next 20 moves and then 15 minutes to finish the game, with a 30-second increment starting from move 1. Draw offers before move 41 are not allowed. The Chief Arbiter is Andrzej Filipowicz of Poland.
For the first time, the games will be played at the new technology center Digital October.
Tiebreak rules & prizes
In case of a tie, the following tiebreak rules will be used:
- Maximum number of games played with Black;
- Maximum number of wins;
- Direct encounter;
- Sonneborn-Berger.
The total prize fund is 100,000 EUR and the prizes are distributed as follows:
- € 30,000
- € 20,000
- € 15,000
- € 10,000
- € 8,000
- € 6,000
- € 4,000
- € 3,000
- € 2,500
- € 1,500
Blitz tournament
Tomorrow at 16:00 CET the tournament starts with the opening ceremony and, like last year, a blitz tournament. Instead of a drawing of lots, the final standings of this blitz tournament will determine the lot numbers for the players. The time control will be 3 minutes + 2 seconds increment and these are the prizes:
- € 5,000
- € 3,000
- € 2,000
- € 1,500
- € 1,000
- € 700
- € 600
- € 500
- € 400
- € 300
As in previous years, the tournament can be followed online with streaming video and commentary. This year the commentators are GMs Alexander Grischuk, Peter Svidler, Sergey Rublevsky and Sergey Shipov.
The tournament will surely be broadcast on all chess websites and servers so you can pick your favorite place. The official live page is online.russiachess.org.
ChessVibes will be providing daily coverage. Of course!

My favorite part of the ´lineup´ are Grischuk, Shipov and Svidler =)
PS Never heard Rublevsky ´live´, he might also be good.

Another 5000 euros for Carlsens pocket ;-)
This is going to be interesting! With both Kramnik and Anand as concurrents. Let's hope Anand will show something here.

Tal memorial has been a lot of draws previously.
So it may actually be an advantage to be among the loosers in the blitz, thus being favoured by more black games by the tie-rules.

i'd rather win 5000 euros and play with white ... and get the rest of the money at the end of the tournament, plus the cup, the pics, the recognition, and finally take over HISTORY

It might depend on whether the difference between first and second on tiebreak is also 10,000 Euros, or if prize money is shared equally and the official winner only gets the trophy plus bragging rights for himself or his fans?
Regarding the lineup, I don't know which rating list was used for the report - certainly not the live rating list but also not the most recent official FIDE list. According to the live ratings, the seeding is Carlsen 2864, Kramnik 2803, Caruana 2790.5, Anand 2786, Karjakin 2782, Nakamura 2775.4 and so on (Gelfand and Mamedyarov currently higher-rated than given above, Morozevich and Andreikin lower).
That's number crunching, but I would say at least Caruana and Karjakin (not so sure about Nakamura) also have chances to win the event. Which score does Caruana need to cross 2800? According to my rough calculations, +2 is required - if he doesn't manage, next stop next chance is already Dortmund.

What on earth are you on about? Predicting a poor performance by Anand and joking gently about his retirement pot is now considered 'hatred'?
And Peter Doggers, shame on you for censoring a harmless and playful post.

What gibberish is this? Who knows whether I am cultured or not, but one thing I will tell you is that culture doesn't hinge on maintaining a state of permanent delusion over Anand's chances, or refraining from any jokes. That's just being silly.

Aspiring to be the best in any sport (which necessitates crushing your rivals) is not a humble thing. So what?

The choice is often between consistency or fewer draws. Think Leko vs Moro.

Well, the official site is nice but it is in russian. Unfortunately, most of the world doesn't speak it. Can someone tell the organizers, that there are other people who are interested in this event and it would be at least nice to have an english version of the site, have the press conferences in english so that we can all enjoy it.
