Again ten players to compete in 41st Dortmund tournament

Like last year, the 41st edition of the Sparkassen Chess Meeting in Dortmund will have ten participants: Vladimir Kramnik, Fabiano Caruana, Peter Leko, Wang Hao, Michael Adams, Dmitry Andreikin, Arkadij Naiditsch, Daniel Fridman, Georg Meier and Igor Khenkin. Before the 40th jubilee edition, the tournament was played with six participants for a number of years.

Yesterday we received the traditional early press release from the Dortmund organizers, and the best news is that they kept then players instead of going back to six. These are good times for chess it seems! Let's look at the list of participants.

Dortmund 2013 | Participants

Kramnik, Caruana, Leko, Naiditsch, Fridman and Meier also played in last year's 40th edition.

This year's tournament in Dortmund will take place July 26th – 4 August. It's a ten-player round robin with six international top players and four top players from the national squad. The main favourites are Kramnik, who won the trophy ten times already, Caruana, who won the tournament last year.

The International Dortmund Chess Days – since 1994 "Sparkassen Chess-Meeting" – celebrated its "birth event" in 1973, which was won Heikki Westerinen of Finland. Over the years the tournament grew into a world class event where almost all of the best players competed, including Garry Kasparov, Anatoly Karpov, Viswanathan Anand, Judit Polgar and Vladimir Kramnik.

Parallel to the main event is the traditional Dortmund Sparkassen Open, with an A and a B-group. This will be held July 27th – 4 August in the Dortmund City Hall.
