WIM Vesna Rozic in need of support

WIM Vesna Rozic in need of support

The father of 26-year-old WIM Vesna Rozic of Slovenia has written a letter requesting donations from the chess community for his daughter, who has been diagnosed metastatic peritoneal cancer. Rozic needs the money for extra cycles of chemotherapy. We publish the letter, which has been circulating the chess media since yesterday, here as well.

WIM Vesna Rozic

Dear Sir,

I turn to you with a request for a donation for the cancer treatment of my 26-year-old daughter Vesna Rozic. Vesna is a final year student of the Faculty of Medicine and a permanent member of the Slovenian chess team. In May this year she became seriously ill. The doctors diagnosed metastatic peritoneal carcinoma. Since Vesna fighter by nature, she has decided that we shall all work together to combat the cancer.

Vesna's treatment was initiated in Slovenia, where she has already received two cycles of systemic chemotherapy. This is not enough to cure the disease. We contacted the Medias Klinikum GmbH, Burghausen, Germany, where Vesna will receive further treatment. Doctors estimate that it will require at least three cycles of local chemotherapy. Each cycle costs between 15,000 and 20,000 Euros. These treatment costs are very high. We are able to pay for the first cycle of local chemotherapy in Germany, but turn to you and ask you to help us collect donations to pay the remaining costs of Vesna's treatment.

Maybe I did not say everything I wanted at the moment, but my distress and the hardship in our family is so great that I cannot do any better.

Yours sincerely,
Adrijan Rozic

WIM Vesna Rozic (rated 2260) was born March 23, 1987 in Ljubljana. . She is the strongest female player in Slovenia behind Ukrainian-born GM Anna Muzychuk. She won the Slovenian Individual Championship for women in 2007 and 2010. She played for the Slovenian national team from 2001 to 2004 in four European U18 championships, and for the Slovenian women's national team in six Mitropa Cups (2005, 2006 , 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012), winning it for Slovenia in 2005 and 2006 and taking second place in 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012. In 2006 she won the individual gold medal for her 6.0/9 on board one. In addition Vesna has played for Slovenia in four European Championships (2005, 2007, 2009 and 2011 ) and four Chess Olympiads (2002 , 2008 , 2010 and 2012).

The Slovenia Chess Federation asks the chess community to help raise funds needed for Rogic's treatment. Donations should be addressed to the Regional Association of the Red Cross Maribor, IBAN: SI56 0451 5000 0397 432, Ref: 50751, purpose: Vesna Rožic (Bank details: Nova Kreditna Banka Maribor, Vita Kraigherja 4, 2505 Maribor, BIC/Swift code: KBMASI2XXXX).

According to Primoz Kokalj, Secretary of the Slovenian Chess Federation, all funds received will be reserved exclusively for the payment of expenses for Vesna's treatment in Germany. In the event that more funds than necessary will be raised the remaining money will be allocated to the development of young chess players and chess activities of the Slovenia Chess Federation.

Such requests for donations have been seen before in the chess world. In 2008, GM Dusan Popovic of Serbia was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure, and for his transplant many fundraising events were organized. In March of this year IM Salome Melia asked the chess community for money for a surgery on her baby, who suffered from a heart disease. Later she wrote a thank you letter, stating that enough money had been raised.

A paypal account for wiring money would be great for overseas donations.

Please set up a paypal account. It will help very much as banking costs for oversea transfer are far too high. I will support the case with my youtube channel if there is a paypal account to easily donate to. People often want to help with smaller amounts and paypal is the way to do that - those smaller amounts count at the end as well!
