Dos Hermanas heading for the finals

In the Dos Hermanas internet tournament on ICC there haven’t been any surprises yet. Most top players, with the exception of Ivan Cheparinov and Ian Nepomniachtchi, have qualified. Among those players are: GM Hikaru Nakamura, GM Tigran Petrosian, GM Shahriyar Mamedyarov, GM Zhang Zhong, GM Gata Kamsky and GM Daniel Fridman. They might get good company tonight, as it looks like Magnus Carlsen, probably right from his hotel room in Monaco (where he enjoys a restday), will play one of the final qualifiers tonight! full story »
Eight edition of Dos Hermanas starts tonight

The world’s biggest internet tournament will have its eigth edition starting tonight. The tournament, which was won last year by GM Fabian Doettling (before e.g. Carlsen and Kamsky) traditionally exists of twelve seperate twelve-round Swiss qualifiers using the Fischer System playing rate: 4 minutes + 1 seconds. The 12 qualifier winners plus the 20 best scores qualify to the 32 KO final. All qualifiers are open for everyone, you only have to sign-up for a free trial-account(!). The tournament has a prize-fund of 7700 EUR and the winner takes EUR 1800. full story »

Preview pressconference Topalov
The fourth round just started and so far it looks promising. Tiviakov refused to play his Scandinavian pet line with 3…Qd6 and chose the accelerated Dragon against the leader of the field, Radjabov. Shirov is creating again fire on the board against Topalov, who always is in for such a fight. This can be a very interesting game. So far the main game of this variation between Van Wely and Sutovsky, Dortmund 2005 is followed.
Carlsen looking very tired today, seems to go for a draw against Anand. Most probably Anand will not give him this additional rest day.

Today Parimarjan Negi missed a big chance for the equaliser in his Amity Grandmaster Challenge versus Kateryna Lahno. In this position he played 28.Rg1? and the game ended in a draw after 28…Bxg1 29.Be6 Ng3+ 30.Kxg1 Ne2+ 31.Kf2 Nf4+ 32. Ke3 Nxe6 33.fxe6 Re8 34.Nf7+ Kg8 Nxh6+ Kh8 and a draw via perpetual. It’s been a while since we’ve seen another move in the game between the managers of Kramnik and Topalov, but today there was another letter from Carsten Hensel, basically stating that he will sue FIDE if the fifth match game isn’t played directly after the last game. full story »

Net nu iedereen blij was dat er weer geschaakt werd en men niet meer over het toiletgedrag van Kramnik had, komt onze grote vriend Silvio Danailov met de mededeling dat 78% van de zetten van Kramnik overeenkomen met de zet die Fritz 9 zou spelen.Just when everyone is happy that the whole toilet incident is gone and we’re playing again, our big friend Silvio Danailov claims that 78% of Kramnik’s moves are the same as Fritz 9 suggests. full story »
Daniel Fridman wins 10th Waalwijk open (videos!)

Daniel Fridman heeft het tiende snelschaakkampioenschap van Waalwijk gewonnen. Fridman versloeg de favoriet Loek van Wely in de finale. Deze werd gespeeld met tien minuten voor wit tegen acht minuten voor zwart, waarbij Van Wely (zwart) genoeg had aan remise. Van Wely overspeelde Fridman, won een stuk, maar verbruikte veel tijd. Toen Loek nog luttele seconden op de klok had, werd hij mat gezet door de gehaaide Fridman.Daniel Fridman has won the tenth blitz championship of Waalwijk, The Netherlands. Fridman beat local hero Loek Van Wely in the final. Fridman, playing the white pieces, had ten minutes to beat Van Wely who had eight minutes, but only needed a draw. Van Wely outplayed Fridman, winning a piece along the way, but this took too much time. When Loek had a few seconds left, Fridman tricked him to a mate. full story »
Brandenburg makes third fourth IM-norm

If I calculated everything as I should, Daan Brandenburg can’t miss out on his third fourth IM-norm. He already scored 5,5/8 and will play Medvegy (2518) tomorrow. As this brings his average rating of opponents to 2376, he can even loose in the last round. Ofcourse Medvegy still has to show up.

Smerdon wins 10th OGD-tournament

Australian IM David Smerdon has won the tenth OGD rapidtournament convincingly. David, who is following university in the Netherlands for a couple of months and tries to play as much tournaments as possible in the meantime, only had to give away a draw in the last of seven rounds. Top seed GM Friso Nijboer was responsible for that. As always David’s play was attractive. full story »

Sergei Tiviakov en Daan Brandenburg misten dit weekend helaas beiden het doel dat ze voor ogen stond in het San Marino open. Tiviakov, net als enkele andere fanatiekelingen een dag na de Olympiade meteen begonnen met dit toernooi, stond een tijdje bovenaan maar eindigde uiteindelijk als vierde, achter de winnaars Milov en Akobian en nummer drie Gagunashvili.
Daan Brandenburg had na zeven ronden een uitstekende kans op het behalen van zijn derde IM-norm. full story »

Bessel heeft ruim verloren. Het was te verwachten. Dus wij hebben ons vandaag maar op de partijen gestort. De bedoeling was om te beginnen met een foto van Viktor Korchnoi. Ik kniel neer om hem op de gevoelige plaat vast te leggen, waarna hij achter zijn jas duikt en het olympiade rondebulletin aan mij geeft. Wat blijkt: Viktor wil niet meer gefotografeerd worden, geen handtekeningen meer geven en ook geen interviews meer geven. Het kost hem te veel energie en hij vreest dat zijn laatste twee nederlagen daarmee te maken hebben. Nederig bied ik mijn excuses aan. full story »
Enrico Blees wint NH-titelrace

De achttienjarige Enrico Blees uit Middenbeemster is de verrassende winnaar van het Persoonlijk Kampioenschap van Noord-Holland. Eerder dit jaar werd hij reeds jeugdkampioen. Met een score van vijf uit zes hield hij de rest van het veld op een half punt achter zich. Zuur waren de druiven voor Pieter Roggeveen: met nog een ronde te gaan leidde hij het veld met een half punt voorsprong en hij had een relatief makkelijke indeling tegen Jeroen Wismeijer. In de slotpartij werd hij echter kansloos van het bord getikt. full story »

In Bulgarije proberen Anand en Kamsky aan te tonen dat niet Topalov maar zij de beste van de wereld zijn. Radjabov heeft inmiddels het recht om Topalov uit te dagen omdat hij als eerste 2700plus-speler met een miljoen dollar over de brug komt. Maar ondertussen is Magnus Carlsen onverstoorbaar bezig met zijn opmars naar de wereldtop. full story »
