[lang_nl]Tijdens het wereldkampioenschap in Mexico City vorig jaar bewees hij andermaal wat een groot speler hij is. Een van de sympathiekste topschakers is vandaag veertig geworden: Boris Gelfand.[/lang_nl][lang_en]Last year, during the world championship in Mexico City, he proved once again how terribly strong he is. One of the nicest top players around has turned 40 today: Boris Gelfand.[/lang_en]

[lang_nl]Boris Gelfand is op 24 juni 1968 geboren in Minsk, Wit-Rusland. Hij behoort al zo’n twintig jaar tot de absolute wereldtop. Gelfand won twee Interzonale toernooien en bereikte tweemaal de halve finales van het wereldkampioenschap.

In september vorig jaar was hij de oudste deelnemer aan het WK in Mexico City, maar eindigde gedeeld tweede (derde op weerstand) met Kramnik, achter Anand maar voor Leko, Svidler, Morozevich, Aronian en Grischuk.

Zoals Chess Today vandaag opmerkte is Gelfand een van de weinige spelers die voor drie verschillende landen op een Olympiade hebben gespeeld: de Sovjet-Unie, Wit-Rusland en nu Israël, waar hij al jaren woont.

Ik ontmoette hem in Dortmund vorig jaar, en later in Mexico City en Nice, en voor mij is Gelfand een van de sympathiekste persoonlijkheden in de schaakwereld. In September last year he was the oldest participant at the world championship in Mexico City, but finished joint second (third after tie breaks) with Kramnik, behind Anand but ahead of Leko, Svidler, Morozevich, Aronian and Grischuk.

As Chess Today remarks, Gelfand is one of the few players who represented as many as three countries at the Chess Olympiads: USSR, Belarus and, finally, Israel where he now lives.

After meeting him in Dortmund last year, and later in Mexico City and Nice, in my opinion Gelfand is one of the most friendly personalities in the chess world.
