  2. john on July 26th, 2010 16:04

funny stuff! perhaps a bit harsh on Pono tho, he does not look so bad!

  3. RuralRob on July 26th, 2010 17:23

When I see pictures of Pono, I always think of the liquid-metal Terminator from T2.

  4. ChessGirl on July 26th, 2010 17:46

LOL he looks like he´s munching a toothbrush!

  5. adam on July 26th, 2010 19:26

comical; and ponomariov is supposed to look absurd. it’s a caricature : )

  7. Kaushik on July 26th, 2010 21:39

lol!! nice to see some really good cartooning n humour in otherwise such a serious Game as CHESS!!

Very good picture, How ever, I think putting Le Quang in this picture there would be very nice… taking in consideration he was an unknown player for most chess fans (and also lowest seeded), obtained second place, and played very exciting games

Does not make sense. Why brake the pig? 2009 is the last coin to enter.

  10. Castro on July 27th, 2010 04:16

To make sense in that strict sense of yours would imply — one way or another —banning all humour, if one thinks of it. But anyway well done spoting that paradox! It’s a nice humourous apendix to the cartoon, which is a very interesting one. (Another from José)

  11. Castro on July 27th, 2010 04:33

Ah! And the 2010 coin couldn’t be extracted from the Kramnik pig NOT because of the picture not showing it entering (and the picture is cut exactly there, so one could argue maybe it also entered), BUT because, of course!, it simply couldn’t have entered Kramnik’s belly.
That said, actualy you could do some logical acrobatics to make it work:
The coins represent something like “Kramnik’s wins AND winning expectations”, and then Ponomariov’s “crushing” gain would be both wining AND crushing Kramnik’s hopes :-)

It’s good, it’s fun, but it’s not the Gioconda !!
I mean, it makes more sense to invest one hour in analysing Bxd5 than thinking what was in the mind of the cartoonist. I’m sure he was not so deep as his interpreters.

Something else is “wrong” with the caricature: Kramnik won in 2000, but not in 2008 (the corresponding coin is not clearly readable, but why is it out of sequence?).

In 2008, Kramnik finished 7th out of 8 with 3/7 (ahead of van Wely scoring 1/7), and the winner with a +2 score was … Peter Leko.

I am writing this not to criticize Jose Diaz, but to point out that – despite his long-term record – Kramnik’s result this year isn’t unprecedented. And the much-criticized Leko can or at least could do better than what he showed at this occasion.

  14. ChessGirl on July 27th, 2010 11:54

When I saw it I thought it could be 2003, did he win in 2003?

  15. Thomas on July 27th, 2010 12:42

No, Wikipedia has a list of all Dortmund winners:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dortmund_Sparkassen_Chess_Meeting

In 2003, there was a surprise victory by Aeroflot qualifier Viktor Bologan, 1 point ahead of Anand and Kramnik sharing second place.

  16. ChessGirl on July 27th, 2010 13:07

ok I checked the list and that coin must be the 2000 victory. Maybe Jose started with 2001, 2006, and then realized he had missed 2000 and needed to put it up there? Anyway… the picture´s funny, so why don´t we all get a life and move on? ^^

  17. Arne Moll on July 27th, 2010 13:47

Well ChessGirl, not before pointing out another ‘mistake’ in the picture: Kramnik is not a piggy bank but a human being! ;-)

  18. Thomas on July 27th, 2010 13:58

If Kramnik has humor, he shouldn’t be offended … there may well be much worse versions of him by Bulgarian cartoonists?

As I wrote before, I wanted to make other points … the second one would be that Le Quang Liem’s result isn’t unprecedented either, and generally it’s a good idea to invite the Aeroflot winner.

  19. marco trollo on July 27th, 2010 14:09

The Piggy on the first drawing look very much like Kramnik.

  20. ChessGirl on July 27th, 2010 14:10

Kramnik makes such a cute piggy bank, though ^^
