Issue no. 2500 for Chess Today

Today’s issue of Chess Today was a special one: it was issue no. 2500. A wonderful achievement by the CT team, which consists of GM Alexander Baburin (editor-in-chief), GM Mikhail Golubev, IM Andrei Deviatkin and IM Vladimir Barsky (besides many other titled players who sometimes contribute). What’s your favourite opening book?

Everyone has a favourite chess book, and if you ask strong players they will probably mention Bronstein’s book on Zürich ‘53, the games collection of Tal or perhaps Fire on Board by Shirov. Today a small variation on this theme, because I suspect that many players also have a favourite opening book. An opening book that had a great influence on their play. To me that’s Beating the Sicilian 2 by John Nunn. Nunn, who turns 52 today, doesn’t write opening books anymore, as he told me in August last year. Sadly, because his books are great. full story »

Lajos Portisch 70

Because of the Dresden hitch, now for some calendar trivia. Chess Today pinpoints that today exactly fifteen years ago Samuel Reshevsky passed away. More happy news On a happier note legendary Hungarian chess player Lajos Portisch celebrates is 70th birthday today. In the sixties and seventies he belonged to the world elite, playing many interzonals and qualifying for the world championship title no less than five times. For his country Hungary he played in twenty (!) Olympiads; they won the 1978 Buenos Aires edition where Portisch scored 10 out of 14. full story »

Yuri Averbakh 85

Today Yuri Lvovich Averbakh has reached the age of 85. Awerbach has become famous especially for his years of hard work in the field of endgames, which resulted in many high-level endgame manuals. However, especially in the fifties he was also one of the world’s strongest chess players. full story »

Van Wely wins birthday tournament Karel van Delft

On November 23, Apeldoorns chess centipede Karel van Delft turned fitfy. To celebrate this, Merijn and Marijke van Delft had come up with a highly unusual present for their father: a blitz tournament with the creme de la creme of the Dutch and Apeldoorn chess world, and on top of that a lot of friends and relatives. Ponomariov grabs ‘pole position’

Chess tournaments do not often manage to come up with well-designed logos in my opinion but the Tal Memorial has a very nice one (and should therefore be shown here as well). Mikhail Tal himself can be seen on it; the eighth world champion who would have celebrated his 70th birthday today, if he wouldn’t have died on June 28th, 1992. The best way to remember Tal is to purchase a copy of his autobiographical game selection but the tournament in Moscow does a nice job as well. Milner-Barry and his Attack

Today it’s hundred years ago that Philip Stuart Milner-Barry was born. His name seems to have been attached to the line 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.Qc2 Nc6, but obviously he’s still known because of the Milner-Barry Attack, a way to play against the Indian Defences: 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Bf4 Bg7 5.e3 O-O 6.Be2. full story »

Arturo Pomar 75

Vandaag heeft de Spaanse grootmeester Arturo Pomar de mooie leeftijd van 70 75 jaar bereikt. Inmiddels klinkt zijn naam misschien niet zo bekend meer in de oren, maar Pomar was in de jaren zestig en zeventig een gevreesd schaker die in veel bekende Nederlandse toernooien heeft meegedaan.

Judit Polgar 30

Ooit was ze een meisje van vijftien (en vier maanden) en werd ze grootmeester, waarmee ze het record van Bobby Fischer verbrak. Vandaag wordt Judit Polgar 30. Ze is inmiddels de moeder van twee kinderen want 6 juli werd dochter Hanna geboren. Haar zoontje Olivér heeft bouwjaar 2004. Dit jaar doet ze mee met Hoogeveen, waar ze onder anderen tegen Veselin Topalov mag bewijzen dat moeders wel degelijk kunnen schaken! full story »

Schaken en vrouwen: het is en blijft een fascinerend onderwerp. Voor sommigen is het andere geslacht een aantrekkelijk mysterie dan wel een noodzakelijk kwaad, voor anderen een ware inspiratiebron. De een ziet zijn schaakresultaten dalen als een vreedzame duif wanneer hij verliefd is, de ander bedenkt de ene geniale zet na de andere als hij aan zijn eigen koningin denkt. full story »

Weer een jarige

Een van de schaakmomenten die ik het meest koester is de openingsavond van het Aeroflot-toernooi in Moskou, maandagavond 14 februari 2005. Er bevonden zich tientallen en nog eens tientallen grootmeesters op het banket, met namen die ik voornamelijk kende uit Informators en andere schaakliteratuur. Op het podium waren grootheden als Spassky, Karpov en Kortsjnoj neergezet om de opening van het toernooi op te luisteren.

In het midden van de zaal, naast elkaar op twee stoelen, zat het echtpaar Smyslov. Eén voor één ging men met ze op de foto; ik besloot mijn respect vooral te uiten door stille bewondering.

Dit is een weblog en geen schaakkalender. Toch wil ik niet onvermeld laten dat oud-wereldkampioen en tegenwoordig vooral problemist Vassily Smyslov, een dag na Kortsjnojs 75ste verjaardag, 85 is geworden!

Overigens is het vandaag ook precies zestig jaar geleden dat de vierde wereldkampioen Alexander Aljechin overleed in een klein hotel in Estoril (Portugal).

Zo, dan zijn we weer bij wat de datum van vandaag betreft.

Viktor Kortsjnoj 75!

Vandaag heeft Viktor Lvovitsj Kortsjnoj de mooie leeftijd van 75 jaar bereikt. Daar kunnen we natuurlijk niet omheen! Viktor de Verschrikkelijke 75! Dankzij Wikipedia leren we onder meer dat Kortsjnoj op 23 maart 1931 in Leningrad geboren werd, op zesjarige leeftijd leerde schaken en in 1959 afstudeerde in het vak geschiedenis. De rest weten we allemaal wel: hij won talrijke toernooien, werd geen wereldkampioen omdat Karpov hem op de meest uiteenlopende manieren dwars zat en is inmiddels de onvermoeibare dinosauriër onder de topschakers. Zoals Gert Ligterink het een paar jaar geleden ongeveer omschreef: ‘Steeds als ik denk: nu is het afgelopen met Kortsjnoj, hij wordt echt te oud, dan wint hij weer ergens een supersterk toernooi.’ Viktor Kortsjnoj: een springlevende legende. Proficiat.

Mark Taimanov 80!

Niet dat ik steeds over jarige schakers ga posten, maar deze kan niet onvermeld blijven. Mark Taimanov is vandaag tachtig geworden. Het is toch een beetje sneu dat hij bekend is en zal blijven als ‘die Rus die 6-0 van Fischer verloor’ (Larsen, die hetzelfde lot beschoren was, dankt zijn bekendheid ook aan zijn partijen met 1.b3 en 1.f4, en zijn status van best of the west). Daarom een kleine rehabilitatie mijnerzijds: hij werd tweemaal gedeeld eerste in het kampioenschap van Rusland en minstens zo belangrijk: hij is een succesvol pianist! Hier kun je zijn platen kopen.
