Yesterday an already historical Dutch Championship has started. By getting rid of some old furniture (e.g. Sokolov, Van Wely, Nikolic and Timman) we’ll be enjoying a 2008 edition that’s as fresh as can be. full story »

Dutch chess player banned after using PocketFritz

Last Saturday, while playing a game for his club, a Dutch chess player got caught outside the playing hall, holding a PDA. On the screen, a chess position was visible. It appeared that the player had entered the actual position of the game into PocketFritz. His game was declared lost, and yesterday the player was punished severely by the competition manager of the Dutch Chess Federation: a ban till the end of the season 2009-2010. full story »

The new ratings

Ratings, ratings. It’s more and more unclear to me whether they’re a curse or a blessing but the fact remains that for almost every chess player no subject is more interesting than the four-digit number next to the players’ names. So today we pay some attention to the new list, the FIDE ratings of July 2007. The original list, published a few days ago, just like the last one in April contained a number of errors (e.g. Michael Adams appearing twice on it!) but today the corrected version has been published. full story »

Without Rik Lith all chess cafes are empty

In the first week of February we received the sad news that Rik Lith (1954–2007) had passed away. Rik was one of the icons of the Amsterdam chess scene and one of the regular visitors of the (also ‘late’) chess cafe Gambit. A bit more than two years ago the circle of friends around Gambit lost two of their brightest diamonds: regular customer Micha Leuw and Gambit owner Menashe Goldberg. Sunday, February 4th, 2007 Rik Lith joined them, whose health had been on the decline in recent years and who only reached the age of 52. On Friday, February 9th, he was buried at the Zorgvlied cemetery in Amsterdam. Chess player and politician Roel van Duijn allowed ChessVibes to publish his funeral oration and together with Tony Lith he collected three of Rik’s games, including a draw against former World Champion Max Euwe. full story »

Homburg Apeldoorn Dutch blitz champion

In the ’subjective reporting’ category, we bring you the following news: yesterday, Homburg Apeldoorn 1 became blitz champion of The Netherlands. Following the rollercoaster-ride of IM’s Manuel Bosboom (12,5 out of 13) and Merijn van Delft (12 out of 13), Roeland Pruijssers and myself could only follow humbly, though Roeland did this with considerably more gusto than yours truly. full story »

Four boards from the clubmatch NSI de Eenhoorn-SOPSWEPS ‘29 can be followed live today. In the Dutch league, my club NSI de Eenhoorn is the first club to show parts of their home team matches online to the world. Today it’s a postponed match from Dutch leage 2A. Kramnik in de KNSB!

Zul je net zien: is de hoofdredacteur op vakantie, begint het schaaknieuwtjes te regenen. ‘t Is er natuurlijk ook wel de (komkommer-)tijd voor. In De Volkskrant vandaag het bericht dat Vladimir Kramnik volgend seizoen voor Share Dimension Groningen gaat spelen. Daarnaast wil Groningen Europa gaan veroveren.

Kramnik gaat het nog druk krijgen de komende tijd. In september staat de reunificatiematch tegen Topalov in Elista op het programma (waarvan waarschijnlijk niemand gelooft dat hij doorgaat totdat de eerste zet gespeeld is), en in november speelt hij een match tegen Deep Fritz.

Dat Kramnik op de goede weg terug is, bewees hij deze maand nog: samen met Svidler won hij het super-GM toernooi in Dortmund. (Op de Russische schaaksite http://www.chesspro.ru/ staan uitgebreide analyses van de gespeelde partijen.)

Het blijft natuurlijk de vraag of Kramnik zijn oude niveau (in de periode 1999-2000 was hij zonder twijfel de beste speler ter wereld) op tijd terug weet te vinden. Maar of dat nu wel of niet het geval is: zijn komst naar de Nederlandse schaakcompetitie is de grootste aanwinst van de afgelopen jaren!

 

Een pionneneindspel vol met vraagtekens

In de partij van uw nieuwe gastauteur tegen Paul van Haastert, uit de negende ronde van de promotieklasse NHSB, ontstond na een tamme opening het volgende, zeer interessant pionneneindspel dat bij nadere studie lastig te taxeren blijkt.

De partijvoortzetting 24.Kf1 was geheel niet interessant; ik werd kansloos weggetempeerd (24…Ke7 25. Ke2 Kd6 26. Kd3 Ke5 27. Ke3 b5 28. a3 a5 29. Kf3 c5 30. Ke3 a4 31. c4 b4 0-1). Wit heeft twee interessante alternatieven, die ik hieronder zal analyseren. Maar eerst wil ik even een vergelijking trekken met de volgende klassieke stelling uit de schaakliteratuur.

Twee KNSB-curiosa

Nadat afgelopen zaterdag de KNSB-competitie was beëindigd, werd ik deze week gewezen op twee curiosa. Allereerst de laatste ronde in de 3e klasse E. Overschie was daar al kampioen en moest tegen de nummer twee, het tweede van Euwe (Amsterdam). Beide teams speelden met één invaller maar de uitslag viel extreem uit: 0,5-7,5 voor Euwe. Het resultaat was een kampioenschap van Overschie op één matchpunt, met maar liefst vijf bordpunten minder dan de nummer twee! Zou dat al eens eerder gebeurd zijn? In de tweede klasse werd Hardenberg ooit kampioen nadat ze tijdens de winterstop nog onderaan stonden en ook toen hadden ze aan het eind niet de meeste bordpunten. De lessen van Rowson

Regelmatige lezers van deze schaaklog hebben misschien de recensie van Peter en mij gelezen over het laatste boek van Jonathan Rowson, Chess for Zebras. Ik vind schaakboeken altijd leuk om te lezen (en soms leuk om over te schrijven), maar of je er in de praktijk ook concreet iets aan hebt, vraag ik me vaak af.

Afgelopen zaterdag ben ik met mijn team, Euwe 1, kampioen van klasse 2B geworden. Ik had de eer het beslissende halfje binnen te slepen. Interpretaties achteraf zijn altijd riskant, maar voor deze ene keer waag ik het erop: ik heb dat halfje mede dankzij Rowson behaald.

Mijn tegenstander had met wit een pion geofferd voor het loperpaar, een ontwikkelingsvoorsprong en open lijnen voor zijn torens. Zwart heeft een pion en weinig zwaktes.
Omstreeks dit moment meende onze teamcaptain mij te moeten vertellen dat mijn teamgenoten zeer pessimistisch waren over de situatie op mijn bord. Ik reageerde geïrriteerd. Waarom waren ze pessimistisch? Omdat ik slecht stond? Maar ik stond een pion voor en de situatie was op zijn minst onduidelijk. Nee, ze moesten pessimistisch zijn omdat ik moest verdedigen. En ‘dat is nooit fijn’. Want ‘het is niet wit die zwart aanvalt, maar de tegenstander die mij (of ons) aanvalt!’
Rowson schrijft hierover:

My impression is that defence is invariably seen as an unattractive necessity that you have to resort to when your attack doesn’t work.

Tijdens de partij was ik me gelukkig bewust van deze ware woorden. Ik moest niet bang zijn om te verdedigen, maar gewoon mijn best doen het mijn tegenstander zo moeilijk mogelijk te maken!
Ik zag dat ik een kwaliteit kon offeren en een eindspel kon bereiken waarin ik weliswaar nog steeds passief zou staan, maar waarin wit geen directe aanval meer had en zeer nauwkeurig zou moeten spelen om zijn voordeel vast te houden. Ik speelde 15…Dxe5!? 16.Lxh7+ Kxh7 17.Dxe5 Pxe5 18.Lxf8 b5 19.Tfd1 Pd7!

Mijn voorspelling kwam uit: de witspeler, die tot dan toe zeer sterk gespeeld had, begon al gauw planloze zetten te doen en raakte de draad al snel kwijt – hoewel de stelling objectief nog zeer goed voor hem was.
In wederzijdse tijdnood gebeurden nog verschrikkelijke dingen, maar het eind van het liedje was dat ik nét voldoende weerstand had geboden om mijn tegenstander, zoals destijds George Foreman tegen Mohammed Ali, moe te strijden.

Full Monty flikt ‘t ‘m weer

Het reeds gedegradeerde De Eenhoorn leed gisteren in de eerste klasse A een nieuwe nederlaag, tegen de nummer twee op de lijst Unitas. Het is echter niet alleen maar kommer en kwel, want één speler uit Hoorn draait een uitstekend seizoen. Martijn Monteban, alias Monty, alias de Full Monty (als hij gewonnen heeft), pakte gisteren opnieuw een punt en tilde zijn tpr daarmee tot ver boven de 2300.

Boer probeert al heel lang een beter eindspel te winnen maar Monty is taai. Hier dacht zwart de vis op het droge te halen met 64…Lxb4? wat er inderdaad gevaarlijk uitziet na 65.axb4 Txb4. Monty ging in de denktank en na de nauwkeurige zetten 66.Lc1 Tb3 67.Tc2 a3 kwam hij met een mooi tegenoffer: 68.f5+! gxf5 69.Kf4 en omdat zwart niets kan doen tegen Tc2-e2+ en g5-g6! was het wit die gewonnen stond!
