Vassily Ivanchuk was eliminated by Mikhail Gurevich on the first day of the 4th ACP World Rapid Cup. This year the annual rapid knockout tournament has Bacrot, Drozdovskij, Eljanov, Gashimov, Grischuk, Gurevich, Inarkiev, Ivanchuk, Jakovenko, Karjakin, Moiseenko, Motylev, Movsesian, Naiditsch, Shirov and Tregubov. Gata Kamsky won the U.S. Championship today in St Louis by beating Yury Shulman in a playoff (rapid) game. Sunday the two eliminated Alexander Onischuk and Hikaru Nakamura respectively, and yesterday they drew each other. Read more
Eljanov wins final FIDE GP, Radjabov qualifies for Candidates

Pavel Eljanov today won the sixth and final FIDE Grand Prix tournament in Astrakhan, Russia. The Ukrainian finished with a score of 8/13, a full point ahead of a group of five GMs. One of them was Teimour Radjabov, who finished second in the final GP standings and qualified for the FIDE Candidates matches. Robert von Weizsäcker announces ECU President candidacy

President of the German Chess Federation (DSB) Robert von Weizsäcker has been nominated by the DSB as candidate for the presidency of the European Chess Union. His nomination is endorsed by both Garry Kasparov and FIDE-presidential candidate Anatoly Karpov, who travelled to Berlin to support Von Weizsäcker. Read more

Besides his team of seconds in Sofia, Viswanathan Anand was helped by some big names before or during his World Championship match against Veselin Topalov. Magnus Carlsen, Anish Giri, Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik all contributed to Anand’s victory in Sofia. The World Champion Monday revealed this in an interview on Playchess. Read more
