Video impressions from León
Last weekend the ChessVibes camera was present in León to capture the match between Viswanathan Anand and Alexei Shirov. Here's a video with some impressions of the town and the match. An interview with Anand will follow soon!
The 24th edition of the Magistral Ciudad de León took place in the León Auditorium, from Friday, June 3rd till Sunday, June 5th, 2011. This year the main event was a 6-game match between World Champion Vishy Anand and Alexei Shirov. The rate of play was 40 minutes per game plus 30 seconds increment after each move. Anand defeated 4.5-1.5; on all three playing days the World Champion won one game and drew one to clinch his 8th title in León. More here.

Wow nice video! I love how friendly and respectful Anand and Shirov are with each other and with fans. They are both a great credit to chess.

It is really a good feeling isn't it?
I like players who are friendly outside the board and set fire to the board when playing the game - gentlemen outside and fierce warriors OTB.
That way, we got a treat in this tournament between the World Champion and the Latvian genius.

When you compare this chess to Kazan, you can see that exciting chess is still possible. Shirov lost but he played the game as it should be played. Chess is not about winning, but about inventing. Great result of course from Anand, his calculation abilities are impressive under these time constraints.

Especially in rapid chess with nothing at stake :-)

Indeed, and I would say "nothing (or comparatively less) at stake" is more relevant than the time control. See also another recent exhibition (rather than candidate) match between Nakamura and Ponomariov, and Shirov's previous tournament in Lublin - where he was much more successful, of course the opposition was weaker but, in rating terms, not "pathetically weak".
Also in, for example, football, a world championship or Champion's League final often isn't the most exciting match of the entire event ... .
