Opening Amber 2008

[lang_nl]Gisteravond vond de feestelijke en chique openingsceremonie plaats - zoals een prestigieus toernooi als het Amber betaamt natuurlijk. Een fotoverslag.[/lang_nl][lang_en]Yesterday night a cheerful and chique opening ceremony took place - as can be expected with a prestigious tournament like Amber. A photo report.[/lang_en]

[lang_nl]Het is altijd weer de vraag op welke wijze de spelers voor het toernooi hun lotingsnummers krijgen. Op dit toernooi begon het steeds met het openen van een paasei waarin de spelersnaam stond. Een voor een werden ze naar voren geroepen en mochten ze een stropdas uitkiezen, waarin een klein briefje met het nummer verborgen zat.[/lang_nl][lang_en]Tournaments always try to organize a special way for the players to draw the lots. At this tournament, every time an easter egg was opened, in which the player's names were hidden. One by one the players then were to pick a tie, in which a small piece of paper was attached with the pairing number.[/lang_en]

Hi, the rate of play is 25 min plus increment. With the blindfold games, they only see a chess board in the screen, and on the right there's a small window that shows the opponent's last move. Moves are entered with a mouse.

Please explain how "blindfold" is played :

1. What do the players see ? Do they see their own moves or only opponetnts move ? Or do they have them in writting ?

2. Does it have same time limits as Rapid? So is it Blindfold cum Rapid? It, of course, does not have time limits of classical!

3. Why does FIDE not value or rank Rapid or Blindfold? Is that done by someone else ?

Great site Peter.

Can you give us some insight into what languages the players speak and which they use to speak to each other. Thay all seem so multi-lingual.

@ Rubenstein: If you look at the picture of Topalov sitting down, behind him are Kramnik, Mozo, Leko, and Ivanchuck.

With Leko there I figure they were speaking english and with Ivanchuck looking bored and from videos I've seen, maybe he isn't fluent?

Great Pictures. I wonder if we will se a handshake between Kramnik and Toplaov when they play there to games here.
I guess they were not at the same table at the dinner !!.

Hi Peter,

Can you describe the blindfolded sessions, please?

What do the players see on the screens of the laptops and for how long.
Do they only see the notation of the moves, like 1.e2-e4, or also the positions for a brief moment or something?

Enlighten us please ;-)
