[lang_nl]De Pivdenny Bank Chess Cup wordt dit weekend gehouden in het gebouw van de Rechtenfaculteit van de Universiteit van Odessa (Oekra?ɬØne). Het is een memorial voor Efim Geller (die uit Odessa kwam) en het prijzenfonds is US $30,000. Het is een dubbelrondige achtkamp met als speeltempo tien minuten per partij plus vijf seconden per zet.

De organisatoren zijn erin geslaagd de twee namen Anatoli Karpov en Viktor Korchnoi vast te leggen. De twee rivalen speelden drie WK-matches - twee offici?ɬ´le, Baguio City (Philippijnen) 1978 - zie de video rechts - en Merano (Itali?ɬ´) 1981, en een onoffici?ɬ´le: de Kandidatenfinale van 1974 in Moskou, die de laatste horde voor Karpov zou blijken te zijn om wereldkampioen te worden.

Tegenwoordig is de haat en nijd wel wat minder dan het geweest is, maar toch moet ik toegeven dat de foto hierboven, met de twee K's zo dicht naast elkaar, niet echt geschoten is maar gephotoshopt. :-) (Trapte je erin?)

Inmiddels vraag je je waarschijnlijk af wanneer je precies moet inschakelen om de partijen tussen Karpov en Korchnoi live te volgen. Nou, ze spelen in de zevende en veertiende ronde. In ronde zeven heeft Karpov wit en deze partij wordt vandaag om 13.00 uur Nederlandse tijd gespeeld. De veertiende ronde wordt morgen om 15.00 uur Nederlandse tijd gespeeld.

[/lang_nl][lang_en]The Pivdenny Bank Chess Cup is held this weekend at the Law Faculty of University of Odessa (Ukraine). It's a memorial for Efim Geller (who was born in Odessa) and has a prize fund of US $30,000. It's an eight-player double round-robin with a rate of play of ten minutes per game plus five seconds per move.

The organizers have managed to bring together the names of Anatoli Karpov and Viktor Korchnoi, the two old rivals who played three world championship matches: two official ones, Baguio City (Philippines) 1978 - see video on the right - and Merano (Italy) 1981, and an unofficial one: the Candidates Final in 1974 in Moscow, which turned out to be the last hurdle for Karpov to become world champion.

These days the animosity between the two isn't what it used to be, but still I have to admit that the picture above, with the two Ks so close next to each other, is not from a real shot, but photoshopped. :-) (You fell for it, didn't you?)

In the 7th round, Karpov is White - this game is played today at 14:00 hrs local time (12:00 hrs GTM, 13:00 hrs CET). The 14th round is played tomorrow at 16:00 hrs local time (14:00 hrs GTM, 15:00 hrs CET).
