[lang_nl]FIDE-president Kirsan Iljoemzjinov heeft aangekondigd dat in het voorjaar van 2007 kandidatenmatiches zullen worden gehouden. Als alles goed was gegaan met de oorspronkelijke plannen van de FIDE (een scenario waar je al bij in de lach schiet) dan waren de matches in oktober al gehouden. [lang_nl]Maar het was weer hetzelfde liedje: Kirsan vond geen sponsors, kon zijn belofte niet waarmaken en kwam in september met een nieuw plan: een kandidatentoernooi in april 2007. De betreffende spelers kwamen hiertegen in opstand (zie o.a. de open brief van Boris Gelfand) en nu probeert Kirsan de wonden te helen met onder meer een lieve duit uit eigen zak.

Dit is wat Iljoemzjinov deze week schreef:

Beste schaakvrienden,

Namens FIDE heb ik het genoegen aan te kondingen dat beide rondes van de Kandidatenmatches voor het Wereldkampioenschapstoernooi 2007 zullen worden gehouden in Elista, 26 mei ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú 14 juni 2007. Het prijzenfonds voor elke match van beide rondes zal 40.000 dollar zijn. Ik zal persoonlijk 320.000 dollar bijdragen aan het totale prijzenfonds en de FIDE draagt een extra 160.000 dollar bij.

De zestien grootmeestes die deelnemen in de kandidatenmatches zijn:

Van bovenstaande zestien grootmeesters zullen er vier zich plaatsen voor het Wereldkampioenschapstoernooi 2007 in Mexico, 11 september [dit moet 12 september zijn - red.] ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú 1 oktober. Zij voegen zich bij regerend wereldkampioen Vladimir Kramnik (RUS) en de grootmeesters Vishy Anand (IND), Peter Svidler (RUS) en Alexander Morozevich (RUS) die zich plaatsten via het vorige wereldkampioenschapstoernooi.

We zien uit naar weer een evenement van topniveau dat succesvol georganiseerd zal worden in Elista.

We zullen zien...[/lang_nl][lang_en]But is was the same song again: Kirsan couldn't find sponsors, couldn't make his promise and came with a new plan in September: a candidates tournament April, 2007. The players protested (see for example Boris Gelfand's open letter) and now Kirsan tries to heel the wounds by another grab from his own wallet.

This is what Ilhumzhinov wrote this week:

Dear friends of chess,

On behalf of FIDE I am pleased to announce that both rounds of the Candidates Matches for the 2007 World Championship Tournament will take place in Elista, 26 May ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú 14 June 2007. The prize fund for each match of both rounds will be USD 40,000. I shall personally contribute 320,000 USD towards the total prize fund and a further USD 160,000 will be contributed by FIDE.

We are all looking forward for another world class event to be held successfully in Elista.
