Ilyumzhinov: 'Gaddafi still in Tripoli'
The name of Kirsan Ilyumzhinov was mentioned in worldwide mainstream media on Tuesday, and again it was related to Muammar Gaddafi. According to Russian press agency Interfax, the FIDE President spoke on the phone with the Libyan dictator, who said he was still in Tripoli.
Ilyumzhinov and Gaddafi playing chess on June 12th, 2011
Like many, on Sunday night we were glued to the Sky News live coverage of the happenings in Libya. The rebels had suddenly made considerable progress and were only kilometres away from the capital Tripoli. It was a piece of brilliant and brave journalism by Sky News correspondent Alex Crawford.
For a brief moment we considered to send out a tweet along the lines of: 'If the rebels want to know where Gaddafi is hiding, why don't they just ask his chess buddy, our FIDE President?' Obviously we refrained from actually sending it, but the actual thought that Mr Ilyumzhinov could be one of the few people in the world actually knowing about Gaddafi's whereabouts, was intriguing enough. Amazingly, today's news made clear that our little thought experiment was not that far from the truth...
According to Russian press agency Interfax, Gaddafi told Ilyumzhinov on Tuesday that he will fight to the end even as rebel forces claimed to have breached the first gate of his fortified Tripoli compound. "I am alive and healthy," he said on the phone. "I am in Tripoli and do not intend to leave Libya. Do not believe the lying reports by Western television companies. I want to express thanks to everyone in the world who feels for the people of Libya. I am sure that we will be victorious."
This news was sent out to the world by mainstream media such as CBS, Huffington Post and The Telegraph (the latter describing Ilyumzhinov as 'chess master'). Libya.tv, run by the rebels in Libya, added that it was Gaddafi’s eldest son Mohammad who called Ilyumzhinov by telephone and then gave the phone to his father.
On June 12th the FIDE President's name was also in all the newspapers and on websites worldwide, because he had actually visited Gaddafi in Tripoli. It was a meeting that lasted two hours, and there was video footage of the two playing chess.
With Libya in a state of civil war and Gaddafi himself accused of war crimes by the International Criminal Court, it was no surprise that this visit by Ilyumzhinov was severely criticised. In the week that followed, the Dutch, English and German Chess Federations all published an official notice of disapproval. Ilyumzhinov then published a press release saying it was “unfortunate that some people are trying to use this trip to wrongfully politicize the situation in FIDE”.

Well, i still don´t see this news in a bit relating to chess... smart people should know that Ilyumzhinov is a political figure too, so this stuff doesn´t belong to a chess news website. Otherwise you could post articles about Kasparovs political activity every month, which wouldn´t belong here either don´t you think...
Also in the last weeks there were some comments on the so called "modernization proposals" by such figures like Kramnik, Sutovsky and a few others, even Korchnoi commented on Kasimdzhanovs suggestion, he said that Kasimdzhanov should get his former title of WC denied lol. Why don´t we read more such things here instead of this political crap which we can see in the mass media every day?

The NATO criminals are not done yet.
Qaddafi is holding out and that's for the better for the Libyans.
Their country is being raped and set up for big time pillaging.
Qaddafi sure is no sweetheart, but he showed guts and his tough resistance will make it harder for the Atlantic mass murderers to pick on their next target, most likely Assad.
Do some independent research on who these 'rebels' in Libya are.
Or on the way of life the Libyans enjoyed under Qadaffi.
It is a shame that so many intelligent people actually believe all the bull shit by the Mainstream Media, whereas it is so totally clear that the US of A and it's pathetic enablers in Europe have by far the most blood on their hands of all the nations in the last 60 years.

That Qaddafi showed guts means nothing. So did Bin Laden against the U.S., Iraq against Iran and suicide bombers against innocent civilians.
He's trying to hold out as long as possible, what are his other options? Either fleeing abroad or giving up. Since he has given up on the former, it will most likely end up as the latter.
Now, it is true that the rebels aren't your all-round democracy-seeking activists, but actually an amalgamation of more than a hundred tribal groups who are fighting between themselves and may hunker something far from democracy. But that does not mean Qaddafi should go. It will surely be good riddance for this world.

I think we are missing the point and getting off topic now, but in all likelyhood the Soviets were able to win in the East because of the Allied activity in the West. And vice-versa.

You are right, I should have said that even I was getting off topic now.

While the Western world plays a multibillion-dollar costing internal wargame in Libya wich actually should be fought only by Libyans, there own financial structure is collapsing.
Soon it will get crowded at the Oil Counter.
The Netherlands has drawn number D4.

NATO is handling just the air-strikes. Boots on the ground are Libyans.
Let me tell you that there is no way in hell Tripoli could have been taken by air-power alone. In fact air-power is almost useless in an urban environment, especially when the enemy is entrenched in the city.
First of all, there are no clear demarcations of the war theater. It will be house to house and hand to hand. This has to be done by the infantry and they better be well trained. You will probably need a 3:1 or higher ratio of attackers to take a city of two million people. Armor is also useless if the city is packed and the fighting is in narrow corridors. The rebels have no way to conduct night time operations so battle lines can shift overnight. Why do you think Israel had a hard time vs the Hezbollah? Urban warfare is the dirtiest and worst kind of fighting there is, especially with 2 million civilians to worry about.
The most likely event that led to the fall of Tripoli is mass defection by Ghaddafi's troops. This win is certainly by the Libyan Rebel ground and political forces, not NATO.

In fact, the 'boots on the ground' were flown in 'fighters' from Iraq, as you can easily check for yourself. There are also many reports of special forces on the ground doing the heavy lifting.
This entire 'rebellion' in Libya was fabricated from day one.
Nato just wanted to get rid of Qaddafi, they call it a humanitarian intervention and most are just happy to cheerlead another slaughter.
Now we will have 20 years of more strife in Libya, wholesale impoverishment of the population, more emigrants to the south europe and the TV viewing masses sound asleep in their righteous 'we helped libya' dreams.

Google 'who are the Libyan rebels really'
Ignore the MSM links and you'll find some answers
And while you're at it: google 'Soros Arab Spring' also for some additional info about what really transpired in Tunisia and Egypt.

I rather liked ChessBase's suggestion that Gadaffi might be hiding in Chess City in Elista. There's only one way to deal with politicians that just don't go away: make them ridiculous. Unfortunately most of the chess professionals or federations don't seem to care all that much.

They are ridiculed for ages now. Yet still here. Still in power to grant YOU, Arne, a press pass if you attend a Fide event. You, volens nolens, acknowledge their legitimacy. While ridiculing them to their face or on the web, in the press etc. Thick skin and shamelessness cant be conquered by ridicule. Destroying the third world coallition that votes for him in fide elections seems the only way out. But the chess world needs real men not pussies like Karpov who now serves Kirsan after badmouthing him for an year if not more. Men with brains, clean, and unafraid to call a spade a spade even when losing and not run to cut a deal behind closed doors. Ex-soviet type of rule runs Fide. Man...these soviets brought so much to this game. Yet, their political figures and their less open political ways undermined the chess world to the extent that even a low level vasal like Kirsan can run it like it's a striptease bar off a New Jersey highway.

FIDE has never granted me anything, Marlowe, let alone a press pass. In fact I requested to be removed from the FIDE rating list some time ago because I don't want to be associated with this organization. So far I haven't heard back from them.

It's very simple; if you don't want to be associated with FIDE and don't want to appear on their rating lists you should not be member of a federation that is paying to FIDE.
By paying a national federation you are automatically supporting FIDE. That's the way it is.

Without D-day Europa was not left to the Nazies but to the communists because the Nazies were losing and the red army was moving from Stalingrad to Berlin!
The Amerikans and Englisch and Canadians had to be quick to take the western part of Europa before Stalin did it.

I'm happy to hear you also aren't pleased with the way things are going on this site, but I hope you won't discontinue it. There may be more positive ways to address the issue.
First, what about at least clearly discouraging (provide for some kind of 'mission statement' in the top line of the page), or even counteract anonymity? I don't understand that the great majority here doesn't seem to want to take responsibility for what they write. What's so bad about being proven wrong sometimes? (I know about that.) Next time better. People will start with thinking or will think better before they react. That may result in less, but better comments. And less comments is a gain: I don't like to go through 200 comments before joining a discussion.
But the greatest gain is that you probably lose 90 percent of the 'noise'. Most people will think twice about calling someone an idiot that can recognize them at the next chess tournament.
Of course, anonymity should be allowed when someone has an acceptable reason for it.
Secondly, you should be clear about what is not acceptable or unwanted, and what you will do about it. You may want an open discussion, but you need to set borders. If you don't do that, the biggest shouters will slowly take over – just because others will leave. Isn't that what is happening here?
Thirdly, there should be sanctions on misbehaviour. Give people warnings, ban them for three months, ban them for life. But maybe you're already doing that – you may have reasons not to go public about it.
Keep up your head, keep up the good work!

There was Allied activity in North Africa, air raids on Germany and the sea blockade by the Western Allies well before D-day. I don't understand your obsession with D-day, is it maybe the only event in the West that you know of?
And once again, the point was not world war 2. Don't you understand that?

What a great event it will be, just like the last editions. It's great how Kirsan and Fide have "democraticized" the battle for the chess crown. Any GM can take a shot and at the same time it provides great entertainment for spectators.
Kirsan is the best Fide president we had in years!
