Opening Press Conference Anand-KramnikJust about one and a half hours ago there was a press conference at the Art & Exhibition Hall in Bonn, where Viswanathan Anand and Vladimir Kramnik spoke to the press. Here’s just a quick article with a few pics; later there will be video material of course. Hopefully I’ll be able to post it tonight.

Next Tuesday at 15:00 CET the first game will start, but ChessVibes is already in Bonn, and you can expect on-the-spot coverage right from the city where the 2008 World Championship Match between Anand and Kramnik will take place. For more information on the match, we refer to our special match page.

Here are a few photos from today’s press conference:

The press conference started with a photo shoot...

...and then it was time for questions of course!

The world champion was looking quite relaxed and confident...

...and sometimes very cheerful actually.

But as a former world champion, the challenger knows what to expect...

...so he seemed to feel fine as well, and was joking along.

Anand vs Kramnik starts in two days and the world is looking forward to it!

    It’s so nice to see these 2 fine gentlemen respect eachother! The smiles are not fake!
    Of course each wants to win the match, but they don’t hate eachother. Which is really good!
    Just a good fight on the board by good sportsmen! The chessworld is indeed looking forward to this match! At last a great chessmatch again! And no dirty political games this time! For sure!!

    It will be a great match.
    The pictures are all wonderful. Congratulations to your team. A great job.
    At last match against Topalov we had only 1.d4. Will repeat it again?

    Regards,

    Bubu - economy is all that I know very well.

    Anand looks nervous and determine, Kramnik looks pale and relax
    I hope this match produce a lot of beautiful and enterprising games,
    avoiding a short draw. Chess King Rapid of India versus Chess King Blind
    of Russia, when Asia meet Europa.

    I predict 7 - 5 for Kramnik…Time will tell…..

    @Bush,

    Anand almost always plays e4…though, we will see if he has cooked something else up to avoid Kramnik’s Petroff drawing system. Maybe one or two games using the English Opening or something else more unusual to get out of book and create a complex strategic struggle right from the start might trip Vlady up. That’s how Moro beat him in Mexico City last year.

    @andre,

    Kramnik does not “look” pale…he IS pale!!! Do not forget, he is Rrrrrrrrusian! ;)

    Have a glance at the photos on chessbase. as well as choosing the chess set to be used, they played a quick game for the cameras. It went:-

    1. g4 b5 draw agreed Kramnik-Anand, W Ch, 2008, Game 0.

    Bent Larsen must be well chuffed.

    This will be a great contest. It promises PURE chess and less antics like in toppy-nikko affair in last 1to1 championship.

    This is time Anand clear all doubts raised on his 1to1 combat capability.
    I hope final result of +3 for Anand, retaining the championship crown!!

    Vishwathan = Nathan of Vishwa = King of the World
    Anand = Happiness

    I think Anand seems very determined for the match! Great chess is comming!

  17. Aljechins Cat on 14 October 2008 7:43 AM

    Anands team looks a little bit more promising for fresh ideas, not as conservative as Kramniks´, especially Heine is known for developing killing ideas to modern 1.d4 systems (he did it to the slav and the the semi-slavs).
    Looks like Kramnik will trust in the Ruy, perhaps the Marshall, since the co-work of Leko and Rublevsky knows the Scotch very well. Perhaps Anand goes for 1.d4, supported by new ideas from Heine? Time for the games to begin!
