[/lang_nl][lang_en]The international chess tournament “AEROSVIT-2008″ is held June 8-19 in the city of Foros, Crimea, Ukraine. It’s a twelve-player round-robin with an average rating of 2712.

Alexei Shirov started very well; he beat Van Wely and Jakovenko and was the only player on two out of two yesterday. Perhaps that was why he took too much risks today; in an equal position he completely lost track. Magnus Carlsen took over pole position by winning a better bishop ending against Loek van Wely.

5 more rating points and he’s number 2 on the Live Top List.
I’v been expecting a bad tournament for Carlsen for about a year now but it seems this guy just does not stop.

Does a score of +4 in the remaining rounds get Carlsen to Number 1 in the world rankings? Obviously +6 in such a tournament is nearly impossible, but who knows…

No, even worse. Carlsen would need to score +7 to obtain for first place in the live top rating list. If he does so, I’ll very much consider it the greatest pull in the post Kasparov era.

Carlsen The Chess Machine!! The great chess genius in the history!!

  5. The_Anonymous_Person on June 12th, 2008 7.44

So that means Carlsen has to score 5.5/7 in the remaining rounds to be World number one!

Btw, Magnus is only .6 of a point off the World No.2 ranking!

Keep the winning streak going Magnus! :)

Carlsen is incredible and unprecedented in chess history. Nobody was that strong at his age. His openings are ’so so’ but he just outplays his 2700 opponents…
Still I think Kramnik and Anand are in a class of their own. But Carlsen will certainly join them, and probably surpass into ELO hyperspace (is 2900 feasible?)

  7. Bert de Bruut on June 12th, 2008 12.03

With 3½/4 the Magnificent is still on schedule…

  8. Gerard on June 12th, 2008 17.30

  9. Hans on June 12th, 2008 19.43

  10. Lajos Arpad on June 14th, 2008 21.32

He got a short sleep before the first round (you can see it in a picture above) :D
