On July 1, 2008 Magnus Carlsen will be the world’s no. 2. He just drew his game against Sergey Karjakin in Foros and earlier today, FIDE confirmed to ChessVibes that the Aerosvit tournament will indeed be included in the July 1st rating list.[/lang_en]
A final report on the Aerosvit tournament will be published later on, but first this “breaking news”. Because of Carlsen’s new succes in Foros, many chess fans have been closely following Hans Arild Runde’s live rating list this week. The Norwegian (no coincidence, of course) keeps track of the daily rating changes of the world’s top 30 and because of him, we’ve known for a few days already that Carlsen has virtually overtaken Topalov, Morozevich and Kramnik.
Today, Gennady Rakhvalov of FIDE confirmed by email that the Aerosvit tournament will indeed be included in the July 1st rating list, just like the 2007 Morelia/Linares tournament was included in the April 2007 list. This means the live list shows a realistic situation and that Magnus Carlsen has indeed continued his fantastic march to the top. On the last list he had gone up from number thirteen to number five, and on the next list this will be an incredible second spot.
We congratulate Magnus Carlsen with this fantastic result, which reminds me of a 17-year-old Boris Becker who stunned the world in 1985 by winning Wimbledon as the first unseeded player. Because the Carlsen’s like a good game of tennis, let’s enjoy it one more time, as a present for Magnus:
By the way, from now on, here at ChessVibes you can always watch the current (virtual) standings of the world’s top 10 in the far right column. With a little PHP script, Hans Arild Runde’s data (which he updates daily whenever a top tournament is on) will automatically be refreshed here too!
Update 19:22 CET
Vassily Ivanchuk beat Pavel Eljanov to finish clear second in Foros. This means he will end up with a new rating of 2791, just one point below Carlsen’s new rating 2972. Ivanchuk will be the new number three, and the world’s five best players will all be in the rating range 2788-2798!
Update June 20, 20:01 CET
FIDE won’t include Aerosvit in the July 1 list…[/lang_en]

Excellent news!
La relève est assuré!
The succession is assured!
How long has it been since the top two were both from outside the old soviet system?
Congratulations Chucky
It is not certain Carlsen will be #2–it could be Ivanchuk. Remember that these day-to-day ratings are only approximations, because we don’t know what is after the decimal point in FIDE’s computer from April. Unofficially Carlsen is at 2791.5 and Ivanchuk at 2790.8. Even if these are correct to the first decimal point, if Carlsen turns out to be, say, 2791.48, that will presumably round down to 2791, tying Ivanchuk, who will then be listed second by dint of having played more games (36-27).
Boris Becker always has been my favorite tennis player. I just love staring into his eyes - such levels of concentration and intensity are basically unparalleled - maybe Carles is an apt comparison.
semipatz on 19 June 2008 23:00 PM It is not certain Carlsen will be #2–it could be Ivanchuk.
If you look at the top of this report, you’ll see that Carlsen is ahead of Ivanchuk on the list FIDE gave ChessVibes.
Isn’t this the first time we have ever had 5 players with FIDE ratings over 2786?
: Recently, Topalov and Anand

first, fide’s numbers from april have no decimals in them at all - it is exactly 2740 for ivanchuk and exactly 2765 for carlsen. (it is the rounded number that is their stored and official rating.)
secondly, players with a k of 10 (which means all rated above 2400) will never get any change (before rounding) that needs to be represented with more than one decimal. that follows easily from the expectation in a single game, which always is a number between 0.11 and 0.89. the score s is one of 0, 0.5 and 1 and the rating change for the game is (s-e) * k , where e = expected score. (s-e) is a number with accuracy down to two decimals, but then it gets multiplied with ten, effectively moving the decimal point one position to the right. hence, any change can be expressed exactly with one decimal point.
so, as long as there is no error in the calculations done for ivanchuk and carlsen, there are no other unknowns in the equation. :o)

True, that is the official rating. But do they use that as the starting point for computing the next rating? I had the impression that they kept one extra digit internally that was not official, but could affect future official ratings. However, I may be wrong.
“hence, any change can be expressed exactly with one decimal point.”
I’ll take your word for this part.
Hup Holland
I hope that Kramnik will restore world order quickly.
Restore world order…………….
How dramatic. Most people in the world have never heard the name of Kramnik.
Last news:
Aerosvit will not count in the July Fide rating list and there for top GM Morozevich will be world’s number 2, as a Morofan I am very happy that’s because the Fide deadline for July list is the 15th June.
Source : http://www.chessbase.com
On Thursday a member of the FIDE ratings commission announced that Foros would be included in the July 1st rating list, “but then on Friday the same member retracted his statement, saying that he had been made aware of the above decision and that FIDE was determined to stick by this rule.”
Thanks Hootan - I guess you hadn’t seen this one yet.
FIDE is doing everything to be unpopular .
Anyway I can’t understand why FIDE don’t have a live raiting-list . I guess ‘Hans Arild Runde’s live rating ‘ have more visitors then FIDE ! …
Stick by this rule : Use The official Hans Arild Runde’s live rating !
Still curious if there has been two non-soviet players. Sorry. Topalov doesn’t count. Bulgaria was part of the soviet chess system, fully integrated. I’m looking for people who weren’t trained by the soviet system who were first or second. So obviously in this sense all the American, ISraeli, Swiss, SPanish, etc emigres are still Soviet. Having done a bit of checking I suspect there haven’t been a top two non-Soviet since way back. As best as I can tell never in the Fischer years.
You must respect to Fide laws,
I am very happy Aerosvit will not included in Fide July list that’s because Fide deadline is the 15th June and there for Aerosvit will not included in July list.
The idea of respecting FIDE laws is a bit funny these days, no? As far as I can see KI feels free to change any rule he likes for any reason he likes and no one stops him.
Anyway, it hardly seems relevant. Magnus is going to overtake everyone. Maybe a while before he is number 1, but can anyone now seriously doubt that he will be?
