Interview with Magnus Carlsen

Some chess players are devastated by losses, letting them infect their mood and their subsequent play. Losing at chess does not bother him that much, Magnus said. “I get more upset at losing at other things than chess,” he said. “I always get upset when I lose at Monopoly.” There’s an interview with Magnus Carlsen in the International Herald Tribune.

I must say that was a pretty pathetic interview attempt. The article writer should be ashamed to have squandered such an opportunity and the filth that he produced.

Whoever commented that should be ashamed for not giving arguments to such a strong standpoint.

In this case I have to defend mr. Disgusted. The interview is really quite silly. I counted less than 5 (!) quotes by Magnus himself, the rest of the interview consists of trivia that can easily be found on the internet or in Agdestein’s book, and a small interview with his father which isn’t so much about chess as it is about Magnus’ youth - and even these facts can easily be found elsewhere, I suppose. Then the ‘interview’ itself raises various questions: when or where was it held? Was it conducted over the phone, e-mail, or face to face? If the latter, then why so few text by Carlsen himself? It’s not clear from the text, and the fact that present and past tense are mixed doesn’t really help…

The interview is by Dylan Loeb McClain. He’s been “covering” chess for a long while now. His pieces have always been like this, some fluff, some trivia that everybody already knows about and some sensationalism. I’ve long ago marked him as a hack and this interview confirms it.

Some of you seem to forget it wasn’t printed in a chess publication.

Indeed, this article was apparently not written for people that already know (or think they know) a lot about chess and the chess world.
If we want our sport and our heroes to become more widely known and popular, this kind of publicity in worldwide newspapers is essential.

this nervosity looks like a blog … Carlsen is numero uno tonight on the board … and you should seriously think with a matter of DISTANCE, a word is not the end of the world , nor the beginning … the boy is 17 years old, and tonight on the board is numero uno … instead of shaking your heads, think that he could be your brother, your son, or someone you are related to … like a devil, an ennemy, a soul, a challenge, humanity, voting machines, clouds, and and and the night that is slowly absorbing you

Real interview or no, I enjoyed reading it. I don’t know why you all are getting so vicious about it.

I’m so happy he’s from my country Norway !

I think chess in Norway never been so popular before thanks to Magnus.

Now no 1 in the world , he’s the most famous man from our country I think.

It reminds me of Kasparov’s rise to the top, except that in those days there was no internet, let alone web-cams.
He did establish a new world record right? (the youngest player ever to reach #1 on the rating list)
