Sergey’s Short Slaughter: 7.5-2.5

7 July 2008 19:47 PM | Last modified: 19:48

In a rapid match that was held this week in Kiev, Ukraine, Sergey Karjakin proved far too strong for former world title contender Nigel Short: 7.5-2.5.

In Kiev’s Academic Puppet Theatre Kiev, from July 3 to 7 a rapid match was played between Sergey Karjakin and Nigel Short. It consisted of ten games of 25 minutes on the clock, plus ten seconds per move.

Short, who had a car accident three years ago while driving with Karjakin from Messinia to Athens, didn’t have a chance in Kiev. With Black he was outplayed twice and luck was not on his side either in his first White game, and so before he knew it the Englishman was 3-0 down.

Actuallt then it was already clear that Karjakin was going to win the match. Short came back with a nice 4th game, but then Karjakin decided matters by winning games 5 and 7 (game 6 was the only draw of the match). Short then won another game, but Karjakin showed absolutely no mercy (and that’s the way it should go of course). Today he finished off with another 2-0, just like he had started the match.

    wow!!
Short is hier echt “ingemaakt” !
Dit is uiteraard slechts rapid schaak, maar wat is precies het grote niveau verschil? Opening preparation? Speed? (voordeel jeugd), Luck, Class, …?

You have to credit that Short tried to make the games interesting by playing gambits and going for interesting positions. Only one draw in 10 games, that is just great fighting chess.

Got something to say?
