Thank you FIDE

And suddenly Aerosvit is not included in the next rating list. Are you still there? We don’t really get it ourselves, so let’s just go and look at some chess games.

And it seemed so simple. Everyone was wondering whether the Aerosvit Tournament would be included by FIDE in the July 1 list (and Magnus Carlsen would become the new no. 2), so I thought: why not just send them an email and ask? But this is not how it works. With FIDE. Now Foros will not be included.

Apologies for giving wrong information - but let me explain. Yesterday’s article was based on this email:

Well, that’s clear, isn’t it? However, you can imagine my surprise when I opened my email this morning:

A remarkable decision since the 2007 Morelia/Linares tournament was included for the April 2007 list, and I cannot find that one in the FIDE Handbook either? Why not make an exception for Foros?

Well, if you really want to know you might consider sending an email to office@fide.com, but I won’t do it. This seems to be the right moment to say: ratings are nice, but we shouldn’t focus too much on it.

Let’s just have a look at some great chess games, from the last round of Aerosvit:

    Hi Peter,

Concerning the game Svidler-Van Wely: the move 23.Qc3 has already been played in 2007 and is not new. The line was also recently tested in the 8th PAL/CSS Freestyle tournament, here white went for the h4-h5 plan:

Thanks Jeroen. Apparently this tournament didn’t make it to TWIC…

“Dit is pas nieuw, en een afwijking ten opzichte van de partij tussen deze twee spelers precies een jaar geleden.”

Deze opmerking in de partij Svidler-Van Wely kan ik niet plaatsen. In de genoemde partij was Shirov wit (niet Svidler) en Wijk aan Zee 2007 is niet precies een jaar geleden……

  5. peter on 20 June 2008 14:11 PM

Michel, zoals de analyse aangeeft werd 23.Th3 gespeeld in Svidler-Van Wely, Foros 2007 terwijl 23.Dg2 voorkwam in Shirov-Van Wely, Wijk aan Zee 2007.

“Oops, FIDE did it again! ” - FIDE golden guideline probably reads: “Whenever a dumb decision can be made, let’s do it!”
They’re so bad that it must already feel so good! Of course it didn’t occur to the FIDE boys two weeks ago when the Foros tournament started that ‘Hey there’s a super tournament starting that ends 4 days after our offcial results’ submission deadline. Let’s be wise and annouce now (in the beginning of June) that it WILL be included on July 1st ratings list.’ They were maybe too busy counting their pencils and paper clips? Oh well at least they’re consistent: bad, no common sense..

Despite all above to end on a positive note: congrats to Magnus and Chucky!

You need to read the email again. Although perhaps a bit strangely formulated, but as I read it, it was decided at a Excecutive Board meeting in Antalya, which presumably took place after the Morelia-Linares 2007.

What’s this? ChessVibes printing a premature, inadequately-researched, knee-jerk story, that subsequently proves untrue? Surely not? I thought it was only those nasty Germans at Chessbase who did such things?

  9. Michel on 20 June 2008 15:37 PM

Peter, I see, sorry. Ik was de weg kwijt geraakt in de variant.

  10. Ritch on 20 June 2008 16:38 PM

FIDE is deprecating his own credibility. The trend will be that in the future the Live Ratings will be more accurate and more popular (and realistic) than the FIDE list itself, at least regarding the very elite of chess

  11. arne on 20 June 2008 19:12 PM

Premature and inadequately-researched, Steve? I’d say asking for an official word from FIDE by e-mail is rather solid evidence for an article. What more can you ask for?

  12. Tore on 20 June 2008 21:22 PM

FIDE is doing everything to be unpopular .

    Anyway I can’t understand why FIDE don’t have a live raiting-list . I guess ‘Hans Arild Runde’s live rating ‘ have more visitors then FIDE ! …

Stick by this rule : Use The official Hans Arild Runde’s live rating !

  13. Coco Loco on 20 June 2008 21:48 PM

It’s perfectly understandable from Ilyumzhinov: having a non-Russian at #1 is bad enough, but also at #2 and #3??? Totally unacceptable.

  14. Coco Loco on 20 June 2008 21:55 PM

On the bright side (depending on your point of view, I suppose), not having Aerosvit rated on this list will make it easier for Carlsen (and Ivanchuk) to continue his climb. At least if I understand the FIDE rating system correctly… For example, he would have gained fewer points in Foros had FIDE used his “live rating” and not his “old” 2765, right?

  15. test on 21 June 2008 1:07 AM

Who cares if the tournament is not rated in the next list, it’s not like the points are lost. If Carlsen is destined to be #1 on the October list it won’t make a difference.

A live list for +2700 rated players is of course great, but a live list for every rated player would probably require too much man power (and is not needed imo).

FIDE went wrong making exceptions to the rule. They should either increase the number of lists released every year or stick to the rule.

  16. jussu on 21 June 2008 11:59 AM

test: “FIDE went wrong making exceptions to the rule. They should either increase the number of lists released every year or stick to the rule.”

Exactly my thoughts. FIDE should be blamed for violating their own rule back in 2007, not for _not violating it_ this time.

It’s cool to have Runge’s live list; I do watch it, too. However, it seems to even strengthen the rating craze among spectators. Some people seem to suggest that since Carlsen has climbed up the list so rapidly, he should be declared the World Champion now (taking into account some inertia which should carry him to #1 soon anyway). Come on, people, chess is a game and rating is a number; while these two certainly have a causal relationship, they are not the same thing.

  17. Mr X on 22 June 2008 12:45 PM

Two week buffer for FIDE to do the rating calculations is absurd and bureaucratic. What do they use? Piece of paper and pencils to figure out the rating changes? In this time and age less than a week should be enough and it’s ridiculous that this top tournament is not included because of exceeding the deadline by four days! Now this tournament is waiting for over 3 months to have effect on ratings. When Anand became #1 common sense won after a huge uproar from the public. But I guess it is too much to ask FIDE to be sensible again.

And of course they should change the rules concerning key tournaments so that they could include those if they end before the publication of the next list - after all, the computers calculate the rating changes in split seconds!

PS. I dislike the rating system, but since it is there they could at least manage it rationally.
