For the game Wl Schmidt - R. Marszalek, Polska 1973:

In the variation 22…Bxf3 23.Bxd3 Bxd4 24.Bxh7+ Kh8 25.cxd4 how can Black’s next move be 25…Qxd4? Doesn’t this just hang the queen? I don’t see any back rank tricks for Black after 26.Rxd4.

Yes it does Bill. In fact, the whole puzzle is rubbish. 22.Rxd3 is the best move; 22.Bf1? Bxf3 23.Bxd3 Bxd1! 24. Bxh7+ Kf8! is quite playable for Black. After I get back from Nice I will double check these daily puzzles.

My first idea today was the remove-the-defender-tactic: 1.Bxd7 Bxd7 2.Rxf6 gxf6 3.Qd1. But it will get complicated to activate the rook… Black controls f4 and f5. I can’t find a way to get it on enemy territory.

Back to the first move… I think there is a way to triple our attack on f6 by playing 1.Bg5 with the idea of 2.Bxd7 and Black has not enough resources to protect f6 any longer. I’m not sure about Black’s first move, perhaps it should anticipate an attack on f7 with 1. …Qe7 and then the forced line 2.Bxd7 Bxd7 3.Bxf6 gxf6 4.Rxf6

I think this attack looks much better than my first one.

Thanks Peter. I also thought the simpler 22.Rxd3 Bxd3 23.Qxd3 looked winning for White.

I looked up the game and White’s rook should be on b1 instead of d1 (21.Rfb1 was played and 21.Rfd1 seems a likely typo). Mystery solved: move the rook to the correct square and it all makes sense!
