FIDE July 1 ratings: Caruana enters world's top 3

FIDE July 1 ratings: Caruana enters world's top 3

For the first time in his career, Fabiano Caruana has entered the world's top 3 in the official FIDE ratings. The Italian has surpassed Vladimir Kramnik after winning 22 points this month. The Russian, who lost 19 points, dropped to 4th place. Vishy Anand dropped to #8 as he lost 11 points.

The new FIDE rating list was published on Sunday night at the FIDE website. Except for the first two spots, the top 20 saw quite some changes. World's number one Magnus Carlsen lost just two points, and Levon Aronian didn't play, but after that it starts: Fabiano Caruana took over third place from Vladimir Kramnik. The Italian was the world's number five player back in December and January, but then dropped back a bit. Now he's reached his career's highest published rating, just four points below 2800.

After Vladimir Kramnik's terrible Tal Memorial the Russian dropped to fourth place, next to his compatriot Alexander Grischuk. He profited from two other players losing points: Hikaru Nakamura and Vishy Anand. The World Champion dropped to eighth place, his worst ranking in many, many years.

Other big winners are Boris Gelfand (who won the Tal Memorial) and Leinier Dominguez (who won the Thessaloniki Grand Prix). Gata Kamsky had a good month as well with a 22 point gain. The biggest losers are Alexander Morozevich (24 points) and Vassily Ivanchuk (22 points). The latter even dropped out of the top 20.

In the women's list, Humpy Koneru surpassed Hou Yifan to get back in second place, now 89 points behind Judit Polgar.

Below you'll find the new top 100 and then also the women's, juniors and girls lists. The first list includes the changes compared to the previous list.

Anand is hiding his true ranking.

Zeblakop's picture

Ohhh Anand in top 8 now :(

Morley's picture

Weren't the blitz and rapid lists supposed to be official this month? Also, congrats to Caruana, a great achievement!

Casey Abell's picture

I checked through the top players, and it looks like Naka's win at the Tal blitz put him at number one with a pretty ridiculous 2879 rating. This was before his loss to Kramnik in blitz at Geneva, though.

strana's picture

Caruana is overrated. Put him to play ukrainian champion Kryvoruchko or russian champion Andreikin and the italian would be crushed. The same can be said about the japanese-american Nakamura : he would suffer a lot to qualify to ukrainian and russian final championship.

Anonymous's picture

Caruana belongs to the top.

Can you please fix your spamfilter?

Ron Jeremy's picture

@Fishy Where is the spam ?

Lee's picture

Maybe he means the spam filter is overly aggressive.

I tried posting something innocuous recently and the filter wouldn't let it through. Frustrating.

Thomas Oliver's picture

I also tried to post this yesterday but, for some reason, never got past the spam filter:

Literal belief in rankings, particularly Anand's ranking, might neglect how close the situation has become between #4 Kramnik and #10 Topalov (fourth just two months ago) and further down the list. With several of these players participating in the upcoming Beijing Grand Prix, Anand could (like Grischuk for this list) "passively rise" if Grischuk and/or Karjakin have a bad event. On the other hand, several players could overtake him, first and foremost Gelfand(!).

Yes, Anand is no longer ahead of but part of this group. He played six tournaments this year - only Tal Memorial was genuinely bad, only Wijk aan Zee (at least the first 12 rounds) was good to great.

A bit in the background. Van Wely is a 2700+ player again. The last time was more than 10 years ago!

Nice to see!

SierraSunset's picture

Just wondering, when more than one player has the same ratting, what determines their ranking relative to each other? Is there a hidden fractional rating?

wtwz's picture

From what I understand, it's the number of games played during that month. The greater the number of games, the higher the ranking.

Michel83's picture

I couldn't find it in the official FIDE handbook, but to my knowledge:
Number of games played (player with more games first). After that, I do not know.

Deodutta Modak, Nashik(India)'s picture

In the lists, it appears as March 2013 whereas it should read 'July 2013'.

Funny, Giri and Vitiugov switched places without playing!?

Thomas Oliver's picture

In the previous list, Vitiugov was ahead based on number of games played - now decimal points might matter (Vitiugov had gained 14.7 points for the June list which was rounded up to 15 points, Giri also didn't play in June).

If I am not mistaken, neither Anand nor Nakamura will play rated games this month - it seems that Anand (2774.7) will "overtake" Nakamura (2774.6) in the August 2013 list ... .

Why is there no ranking pages for rapid and blitz???
