Beauty in Chess (I)

22 May 2008 0:19 AM CET | Last modified: 16:10 | By Peter Doggers  | Filed under: Reports | Tags: , ,

As promised, we present you the lecture by IGM Jonathan Rowson which he gave on Monday night, here in the Porto Mannu Residence in Capo d’Orso, Sardinia. The subject: beauty.

One of the nice things of this tournament is that a number of the invited grandmasters also give a lecture. This year they are Mihail Marin, Jonathan Rowson, Jacob Aagaard and Tiger Hillarp Persson. The last three will be published here at ChessVibes.

So Monday night it was Rowson’s turn. The image quality is not great, unfortunately, but still the video is not to be missed! In the background you can hear the rain by the way. Luckily the weather has improved by now.

Due to technical reasons the lecture has been split into two parts. Part II will be published shortly. Enjoy!

Jonathan Rowson has written three chess books , all highly recommended: Understanding the Grünfeld, The Seven Deadly Chess Sins and Chess for Zebras.

A very instructive lecture by Mr. Rowson! I particularly liked the position after Ng5 at the end of the video - that zugzwang position is pure brilliance and genius :).

Inderdaad is Dc7 een erg mooie zet. Alleen jammer dat Ld5!! een geforceerd mat in 7 is. Die zet doet trouwens voor mijn gevoel weinig onder aan schoonheid in vergelijking met Dc7.

    Cniels,
Heb hetzelfde probleem met Vista & IE7.
Oplossing: Klik op het icoontje “Guide and details about this episode” en daarna op “Read more about this post on Blip.tv”. Dit opent een nieuwe pagina waar het fullscreen icoontje wel werkt. :)

Thanks for your lecture Mr Rowson. One of my greatest pleasure is to read you even though your level of English is often to subtle for me (as you can see with this comment) But thanks to you, I enjoy improving my chess, my English and the philosophy of the game
Please continue do not change your style

What if black plays Nf1 instead of taking the Queen?
