Bundesliga Weekend

It’s Bundesliga weekend again. Amongst others, Morelia/Linares participants Carlsen, Shirov and Ivanchuk play for their German clubs.
After the winterstop, this weekend the 8th and 9th of the strong German club competition is being played. The maches take place at the venues of the four clubs SK Zehlendorf, Erfurter SK, Aljechin Solingen and Godesberger SK. Here are Saturday’s most important results:

And here a selecion of the most interesting games. Chess journalist Stefan Loeffler played a nice, original game against Lothar Vogt where the exchange of White’s black-squared bishop didn’t help Black from being crushed. Champion of France Maxime Vachier-Lagrave did a good job too, against Petr Haba’s Petroff. After 13…Qc8?! Black never really got into the game anymore. Wojtaszek-Kasimdzhanov was another paragraph in the highly topical Semi-Slav - in this case White was outplayed slowly. Impressive was Ivanchuk’s victory with Black against Luke McShane. From the start, the Ukrainian wanted to force an ending, and after the queens got exchanged, indeed he proved the better player in that area. The young Dutch IM Robin Swinkels won a nice hedgehog against Gennadij Fish and an even bigger Dutch success was for Daniël Stellwagen: he managed to beat Peter Svidler with Black. The Russian seemed to have a crushing attack, but Daniël defended very well (the key move 25…d4! might have been missed by Svidler). Carlsen’s interesting 9.Rxd4 had been played only once (in a game Kuntsztowicz-Dankert a long time ago, where Black did 9…Nb6) and it yielded him a slight edge. But the experienced Jussupow managed to keep it that way, and drew relatively comfortably.
