De stelling komt uit de partij Thorfinsson-Gunnarson, die op 9 december op de IJslandse televisie werd gespeeld. Als we Karl Thoroddsen moeten geloven, was het Bobby Fischer zelf die deze combinatie per telefoon doorgaf aan de spelers in de studio. (In de partij verloor zwart na de gigablunder 37…Kg8?? 38.Dxg7 mat). Oftewel een artikeltje in de categorie ‘het is Fischer dus het is nieuws’.

Robert James Fischer heeft inmiddels een flinke weerzin ontwikkeld tegen het klassieke schaak, vanwege de alsmaar groeiende openingstheorie, maar het doet ons toch deugd dat hij op dat veilige eilandje met geisers, waar buitengewoon veel schaak wordt vertoond op de televisie, ook hij aan de buis gekluisterd zit.

The position is from the game Thorfinsson-Gunnarson, which was played on December 9 on the Icelandic television. If we should believe Karl Thoroddsen, it was Bobby Fischer himself who told the players this combination by phone after the game (which, by the way, after the gigablunder 37…Kg8?? 38.Qxg7 mate). So this is a little article in the category ‘it’s Fischer so it’s news’.

Robert James Fischer has developed quite a disgust when it comes to classical chess, because of the ever-growing opening theory, but it’s nice to hear that on that safe island with gysers, where you can watch an awful amount of chess on television, he’s also watching and enjoying himself!
