This weekend: Dos Hermanas

17 April 2008 21:52 PM | Last modified: 18:00

This weekend, the famous 4-player rapid tournament in Dos Hermanas takes place. In this year’s edition, Veselin Topalov, Alexei Shirov, Judit Polgar and Francisco Vallejo Pons will play. A nice event to follow live.

From the press release by the organizers:

The best players return to Dos Hermanas!

Four mental sport aces will play in Dos Hermanas (Seville), one of the most attractive rapid chess tournaments of the year. They are former world champion (and current number 4) Veselin Topalov; the Leonardo da Vinci of chess, Alexei Shirov; the best women player of all time, Judit Polgar, and former world under 18 champion Paco Vallejo.

All of them are nonconformist gladiators, for which chess and risk are synonyms. That is why their play is specially appreciated by organizers and chess fans.

This high combativeness factor is one of the main reasons why the Dos Hermanas Sports Council (organizer of the event with the support of the Seville Deputation and the Junta de Andalusia) invite precisely these players to an event that will bring back the best players in the world to their city.

More than a decade has gone by since Garry Kasparov, Anatoly Karpov and the rest of the best players of the 90’s have played five memorable tournaments (1993-1997) that will go down in history as some of the best world events during each of these years.

(…)

Lots of nice words follow to describe how great the Dos Hermanas chess scene still is, but the true chess fan thinks back nostalgically about those great Andalusian nineties. Anyway, for live coverage on the internet, rapid games are great of course, especially with these players, so we’ll surely have some fun this weekend.

There will be semi-finals (April 18th and 19th) and final (April 20th), with pairings that will be decided on tonight.

In each match four rapid games will be played: twenty minutes plus ten seconds increment. When a match is tied, it will be decided with blitz games. The time schedule will be 16:30 hrs for game 1, 17:30 hrs for game 2, 18:30 hrs for game 3 and 19:30 hrs for game 4.

Chessvibes published a cry for need for a 25-year old guy on this planet..a grandmaster in chess but that’s not relevant. He needs 70.000 US dollars, so i guess we all can send 100$ to iban and paypall and save a life just for him and saving a life. So chess is alive!

And of course Peter will not allow any other request for health and care on this (chess)site any more, because it makes us feel guilty!

dear readers i’m gonna donate money to his HEALTH i hope you join me for this….but i feel myself a bit blackmailed!
