38th Chess Olympiad takes off
Today the 38th Chess Olympiad starts in Dresden, Germany. There will be 152 federations participating and this is a historical mark of number of participants in an Olympiad. ChessVibes will bring daily coverage.
Dresden is most probably hosting the largest Chess Olympiad of all times. After the final closing of the registration on 19 September 2008 more than 2000 active participants ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú players, captains, arbiters, delegates, officials and ?¢‚Ǩ?ìothers?¢‚Ǩ? ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú have announced their attendance in the tournament from 12 to 25 November 2008.
With the 152 registered federations Dresden outbids the last Olympiad of Torino with seven additional nations. Participating federations apportion to 275 teams of which 156 in the open and 119 in the women's section, including the second German team and IPCA, IBCA and ICSC equips.

After the Olympic summer games, the Chess Olympiad is the largest sporting event regarding numbers of participating federations worldwide. With record-breaking figures the expectations also grow: in addition to the players the International Congress Center must host arbiters, organizers, officials and volunteers plus hundreds of visitors each day. Among all federations, Russia remains favorite when it comes to title aspirants even though nearly all stars of the chess world will be present.
Dresden also makes history in respect of playing regulations. Thus, the autumn tournament has received the nickname ?¢‚Ǩ?ìReform Olympiad?¢‚Ǩ? thanks to numerous rules changes. Among others for instance that players will immediately lose their match if not present on the board at the time of the beginning of the match. Also, draw agreements are not allowed before the 30th move.

Prediction for the gold medals:
Board 1: Magnus Carlsen (also because Norway will not face the toughest opposition.)
Board 2: Alexander Morozevich (2787 on board 2?!)
Board 3: Peter Svidler
Board 4: Wang Hao (he's underrated at 2696, his recent performances have been much better.)

is there a 'live' site available for these games excluding the 'dresden' player. i don't have the bandwidth for that. once again the poor man has been prevented from participating because he doesn't have the latest and greatest. the rrecent spanish rapid games were a fine example of good coverage, video + java board + mp3 analysis at low bandwidth.

Well thought out post from R Mutt. I'll be interested to see how accurate his predictions turn out to be (he won't be far away, I reckon).
Got to laugh at any team having a 2787 as board two. Another example of this was in the 1968 Olympiad, when USSR were strong enough to have Smyslov as second reserve(!!), lol.

The Olympiad website seems very poor:
amongst other things the much vaunted TV station is not working and with only a few hours to go the first round pairings are unknown. I hope the teams know who they are playing, at least.

R. Mutt, what are the rules for awarding the medals? % scored or performance rating achieved? If it the latter, I think your prediction is correct, if the former, then I would guess that some of the medals will go to virtual unknowns from lower half of the roster.
P.S.
I can only agree with Popuscu regarding the vendor lock-in thing and with Nero Wolfe about the pairings. Hopefully the latter will be only a problem for the first round until the organizers accumulate some know-how. Unfortunately, I predict we will also see the usual first round "surprise" - lagging or no live relay at all.

I take my words back - organizers have managed to provide flawless live relay of the games. I also like the software they use, very convenient!
