[lang_nl]Adams wint Magistral Ruy L?ɬ?pez[/lang_nl][lang_en]Adams wins Magistral Ruy L?ɬ?pez[/lang_en]

[lang_nl]Na een snelle remise in zijn directe confrontatie met nummer twee Sargissian heeft Adams gisteren soepeltjes het Magistral Ruy L?ɬ?pez gewonnen.[/lang_nl][lang_en]After a quick draw in his last-round game against number two Sargissian, Adams secured a smooth victory at the Magistral Ruy L?ɬ?pez yesterday.[/lang_en]

[/lang_nl][lang_en]Michael Adams was the highest rated player in M?ɬ©rida, and did what he was supposed to. Three draws (against Granda, Zhang Pengxiang and Sargissian) and four wins (Koneru, Hou Yifan, P?ɬ©rez Candelario and Caruana) sums it up well.

A fine second place was for Zhang Pengxiang and third ended Sargissian. Top talents Caruana and Hou Yifan had a bit of a hard time against "experience", and finished 2,5 and 2 / 7 respectively. Local hero P?ɬ©rez Candelario, who's also Alexei Shirov's second, finished on an exellent fifth place last year but couldn't repeat it this time.

Here are some games from the last four rounds. In the second, Granda resigns after a well-known blunder in the opening, where other players managed to draw with Black (and one even won).

Michael Adams had a 2822 performance rating from this tournament - excellent result! It is excellent to see that Mickey is finding his form again after a bit of a rough patch in the past few years.

this performance probably puts him in the top ten!

Michael Adams is unlikely to reach the top 10 again.

there are others who play without seconds. e.g. mamedyarov, although his soultion is to take people out of book before move 5. hehe. but he has been pretty successfull. and well, I dont think carlsen always has a second, does he?
anyway, maybe adams prepares -a lot- before going to a strong tournament. and saves the money he would have to pay for employing a player as second for two week.

Mickey has always been extremely efficient in dispatching lower graded players. He only struggles against top 10 players. He doesn't seem to be quite as proffesional as his rivals, for example playing in Mexico without a second?! How do you compete in the openings by yourself against teams of grandmasters. Mickey also is badly shackled by the Petroff...

Hi,

As a novice, I am enjoying your analysis of the games in this tournament as well as other tournaments. Just a couple of questions:
1) Are your analysis generated from Chess engines?
2) In the game, Hou?¢‚Ǩ‚ÄúZuniga, can you be a bit more specific (for a novice!) and tell me the "well-known opening blunder" move (or moves)?

It just seems to correspond with the Super GM's finding it very easy to equalise against Adams with the white pices very easily over the past year. Especially with the Petroff - though this isnt exclusive to Adams.
In terms of general play Mickey can hold his own with any company - it seems to me his recent flat performances stem from his lack of bite with white!

Maybe this performance heralds a change, as his performance here was very impressive.

Hi Gabriel, 1) Rybka is usually kind enough to give some advice, yes, and 2) 13...Bxa8 is dubious already I think.

kowe's picture

this was a category 15 (Cat 15 2600-2625)

so the winner was 100 points above the average

kowe's picture

also, the average rating of Adam's opponents was less than 2600
