Bundesliga: Baden-Baden still on 100% but Bremen leads

BundesligaOSC Baden-Baden is the only team left in the Schachbundesliga that won all of its matches. Still it's Werder Bremen that leads the current standings, since this weekend not only the 3rd and 4th round of the German league were played, but also one match of the 7th round. We have all results and a selection of games, including the shocking loss of Alexei Shirov in only 16 moves against Michael Bezold.

This weekend's top matches took place in Bremen and Mülheim. The host team Bremen defeated the team of Eppingen 5.5-2.5 on Saturday, which included a win for Bremen's board 1 Pavel Eljanov against Evgeny Postny.

In Mülheim the host team faced the team of Solingen, and this match was decidede by just one game. With seven draws on the other boards, Solingen's Predrag Nikolic became the match winner thanks to his victory against Pavel Tregubov.

BundesligaThe German Champion OSG Baden-Baden was playing at home and was odds-on favourite in the matches against the teams of München and Erfurt. And indeed, on Saturday FC Bayern München was defeated 5.5-2.5 (despite Alexei Shirov dropping a piece on move 15 on board 1 against Michael Bezold!) and the next day Erfurter SK was slaughtered 0-8.

The round 7 match between Werder Bremen and Hamburg was already played on Friday and ended in a 4-4 tie and so Bremen is leading the standings after this second Bundesliga weekend, by one match point, but Baden-Baden still has a chance to catch up.

In the game section below we highly recommend the game of one of our Tal Memorial commentators, GM Wouter Spoelman, against Robert Rabiega. A fine example of Fischer's favourite ending: bishop versus knight in an open pawn structure.

@ask and @Thomas:
1. The problem with the games ot the 2. leagues is known in Germany.
2. The German Chess Federation is responsible for this leagues and not the Schachbundesliga so that they should collect and publish them at their website.
3. I´ve asked one of the responsible officials if the games are published somewhere, if yes than I will put the link here.
4. "apparently others already tried emailing Schachbundesliga in vain"
I´ve never received an E-Mail from anybody concerning this problem

Shirov would have lost a bishop for a pawn, but forfeiting on move 16 with ALL your other pieces still on the board is pathetic.

Thomas's picture

@ask: This question was also asked at the German forum schachfeld.de. Apparently the games are not systematically saved and compiled, apparently others already tried emailing Schachbundesliga in vain .... . Maybe you find a few ones on various club homepages - assuming that you are mostly interested in the Dutch players I checked SG Porz but they don't have anything.

Michel83's picture

Ouch...look at Shirov's game against Bezold...I feel sorry for Shirov, but good to see such beginner-blunders happen to GMs sometimes too. The famous "blind spot" I guess. It's ok Alexei, happens to me all the time. ;)

1 liga interesting, but where to get pgn from second bundesliga (west)? last seasons. twic and chessassistant dont have it.

Peter Doggers's picture

Guess you should drop Schachbundesliga an email.

Maarten's picture

@Thomas:
As a matter of fact the games of the second Bundesliga are collected by the arbiters and subsequently put in a Chessbase file. As a player in the 2BL Nord, I receive these files via my club. With some (substantial) delay these games also appear in the Chessbase megabase.

@Georgios Souleidis: Sorry for making up item #4, indeed this is not mentioned in the discussion I referred to. But apparently you wouldn't be the right person to ask (though you possibly know the right persons), because the Bundesliga is - not only literally - a different league: more professional regarding both the average player and the media coverage (and having more media interest in the first place).
Of course there are also professional players in lower leagues: From a Dutch perspective, I don't think Van Wely, Timman, Van der Doel and Reinderman are playing for Koeln-Porz [only] because they love travelling and playing chess.

@Maarten: This confirms what others wrote at schachfeld.de (actually in 2007/2008)

My summary of the German discussion:
Participating clubs get the games as a (paid) database service. It is then their choice if they
- use this service (I guess most of them do, but one poster complained that he cannot find recent games of his opponents)
- share the games with others for free (e.g. Karlsruhe put the games from the southern league on their webpage)
The fact that the games eventually appear in the Chessbase megabase supports also the suggestion by one poster: "I guess for the federation it is sufficient to hand the games to an exclusive partner so he can better sell his product."

@ask: If you are very seriously interested (I am not, just trying to help), the best might be to contact any club - or, if applicable, any player whom you happen to know personally.
