Capablanca memorial: three-way tie at half time
At the Capablanca Memorial in Havana, Cuba three GMs are sharing the lead at half time: David Navara, Le Quang Liem and Dmitry Andreikin. They scored 3/5, half a point more than Vassily Ivanchuk. Cubans Leinier Dominuez and Lazaro Bruzon follow with 2/5 and 1.5/5 respectively.
The 46th Capablanca Memorial takes place May 10-21, 2011 in Havana, Cuba. The main event (or "Elite group") is a strong, 6-player, double round robin with Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukraine), Leinier Dominguez (Cuba), David Navara (Czech Republic), Lazaro Bruzon (Cuba), Dmitry Andreikin (Russia) and Le Quang Liem (Vietnam). The rate of play is 90 minutes for 40 moves plus 30 minutes to finish the game with 30 seconds increment from move 1.
In the first two rounds there were only two decisive games; Bruzon lost twice with Black against Andreikin and Navara. The poor Cuban also lost his third game, with White against Le Quang Liem. In this round Ivanchuk defeated Andreikin to join Navara and Le Quang Liem in the lead with 2/3.
Especially taking into account these first three rounds, the next day saw a big upset. Bruzon defeated Ivanchuk with Black. How exactly remains unclear for the moment; the final position in the available PGN is just equal, and the report on the tournament website doesn't give any further explanation.
Update: full game now available. Ivanchuk pressed and pressed, and then simply played for a win too long.
In the same round, Andreikin won a nice game with Black in a Hedgehog against Dominguez to join Navara and Le Quang Liem in the lead with 2.5 points. With three draws in the fifth round, nothing changed in the standings.
We give all games below in the viewer for replay. Don't miss Navara-Le Quang Liem; a spectacular attacking game that ended at move 64 with some charming humor!

A lot of readers will be pleased if you could explain (if you reach that information) how Ivanchuk-Bruzon ended. Until Ivanchuk had more time on the clock...

The game ended at move 53. Maybe Ivanchuk had spent his last 30 minutes already and was going on the 30 seconds increment for each move. Maybe he kept staring at the ceiling for too long at some point and lost on time.
