Corus 2009: Grandmaster Group A
Nex Saturday the 71st Corus Chess Tournament takes off with the first round of the Grandmaster Groups, A, B and C. Naturally, ChessVibes will be present, during the whole tournament, to provide as much (video) coverage as possible. (And yes, that includes our famous press conferences videos!) Today we look at Grandmaster Group A - who's your favorite?
Even without Anand, Kramnik and Topalov (or perhaps because of their absence!) this year's Grandmaster Group A will be a very intesting event. There's no clear favorite, and the field is a wonderful mixture of experience and talent, and full of real fighters!
18-year-old Magnus Carlsen is one of the favourites to win the 71st edition of the Corus Chess Tournament, together with routiniers Alexander Morozevich and Vassily Ivanchuk. Carlsen won the jubilee event in January this last year together with the Armenian grandmaster Levon Aronian. Like Carlsen, Aronian is also one of the participants in this year's event.
The two titleholders will meet Vassily Ivanchuk and Alexander Morozevich, as their main rivals. Ivanchuk and Morozevich had quite a successful year in 2008 and are currently ranked third and fifth in the world.
Five players will make their debut in the A-group: the young Dutch grandmasters Jan Smeets and Daniel Stellwagen, the sensational Wang Yue from China, who climbed up to the 13th place on the latest world ranking list, the winner of Grandmastergroup B in 2008, Sergei Movsesian, and the flamboyant grandmaster Leinier Dominguez from Cuba (ranked 21st on the FIDE October rating list).

I think I'm cheering for Radjabov, he can certainly win if he is in shape, and he plays very entertaining. It would be nice to see him win a super tournament. I also hope Kamksy plays well, would be good to see him show good form for the upcoming match.

Without Anand or Topalov, Carlsen chances of winning increase a lot, besides Wijk is a bloody place and it fits his risking style.

Another question of at least local interest (and this is a Dutch site after all): How will the three Dutch players perform? More provocatively: Will Smeets and Stellwagen together score as many points as the winner on his own? [I don't think either one will BE the winner - in the poll, presently Smeets got more votes than Adams or Karjakin, but this seems to be wishful thinking and/or just a joke ,:) ?]
Regarding Smeets and Stellwagen, a major Dutch newspaper (de Volkskrant) today quoted Smeets: "De kans bestaat dat we keihard afgaan" [there is a chance that we will be losing big time - not a perfect translation, but the best one I can offer]. And making _this_ the headline of the entire article is IMHO an(other) example of sensational journalism ... .

Aronian 's goin' 2 have a Corus hat trick this year, just like his compatriot Kasparov Garry in 1999-2001.

@Ceann: "although I want Ivanchuk to win (easily the most talented)"
Yeah, right! He is extremely gifted, but Carlsen is even more talented than that. Look what he already has accomplished at his age!
I've voted for Morozovich. Also an extremely gifted player, and I think he can go all the way if he can have a good start...

@Manu: Carlsen always takes his chances, even in drawish positions he keeps pushing, this entails risks.
Who's your favourite to win? Dominguez will be interesting to follow, to see if he can climb more, but it's another issue.

I don't think it's completely absurd to say that Carlsen is the most talented player of his age the world of Chess has ever soon. Number 4 in the world, unofficial number 1 at one point, won numerous top GM tournaments among them Corus, Biel, one of the Grand Prix events, nearly 2800, he unrealenting style, I mean we all have seen the video where he grinds down Shirov until Shirov breaks and makes at very very big blunder.

To win you can't be afraid to lose. This is a quality that Carlsen posses. Whether you like him or not, he has to be the favorite.

You are right! I see that my big mought knows what to talk! Morozevich never will win big event! Corus is not Saraevo! And he is more better when explains how other guys cheat than when must play chess! By the way Dominges use Rybka 15, Fritz 12 and Shreder 23 :))
