Corus becomes Tata, with Anand, Carlsen and Kramnik

Corus becomes Tata, with Anand, Carlsen and KramnikNow officially communicated in a press release, the Corus Chess Tournament, formerly known as Hoogovens Tournament, will have yet another name in 2011: Tata Steel Chess Tournament. Three big names among the participants have been made public already: Viswanathan Anand, Magnus Carlsen and Vladimir Kramnik.

The 73rd edition of the annual chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee will be called Tata Steel Chess Tournament. The famous international chess festival, which started in 1938 under the name Hoogovens Chess Tournament, was renamed to Corus Chess Tournament in 2000, after the merge of Hoogovens and British Steel.

Tata Steel bought Corus in April 2007 for 8.1 billion Euros and is currently the world's seventh largest steel company. With an annual crude steel capacity of 31 million tonnes it is the largest private sector steel company in India in terms of domestic production.

The tournament will no doubt be one of the strongest of 2011. At this moment the participation of Magnus Carlsen (number one in the world and winner in 2010), reigning World Champion Viswanathan Anand and former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik has been announced. The organizers hope to complete all 14 players in the A group right after the Olympiad. The participants lists for groups A, B and C will be announced at the end of October.

The 73rd Tata Steel Chess Tournament will be held from Friday, January 14th till Sunday, January 30th in sports complex De Moriaan in Wijk aan Zee.

Tata, Corus, Hoogovens, whatever. It's Wijk aan Zee, hooray! I'm glad the company continues it's patronage of chess, whatever the name.

these three players who have already been announced might get sick of seeing each other soon, with all of the tournaments they will be participating in together. unfortunately, if kramnik will be playing, that will probably mean topalov will be absent.

aun1 thats the best part of Kramnik playing. Every time Topalov doesn't play the world cheers.

Speak for yourself.

Topalov is a tremendous fighter and it is a joy to see someone who is not afraid to lose.

@aun1: Kramnik's presence doesn't necessarily imply Topalov's absence - after Elista, they played together in Corus 2007 and 2008, Amber 2008 and 2009, and Zurich Champions Rapid in 2009. Another story is that they still don't shake hands, let alone talk to each other ... . Well, it's possible though that their relationship became (even) worse because Kramnik helped Anand in his WCh match.

You may be right for a different reason: Corus only wants or only can afford three top5 players - but then Kramnik isn't the only culprit, it would be the same if he was replaced by Aronian!?

there is a mistake : not from Friday, January 11th but from Friday, January 14th

Would love to see Kramnik beating the overhyped Carlsen.

It is better toplov out of the tournament because toplov team always makes problmes to the players, the tournaments orginisers. why should take additonal pressures by inviting Toplov. His manager Danilove behaviour nobody can bear. He is a good player that does't means his team should make cheap comments about other. Play gentleman game and leave the tournament like a genetle man. But this is a question mark because Danilov is there.

I hope Tata steel makes serious effort to bring in Topalov also. Not only because he was the challenger and so theortically the second best after Anand, ok Kramnik is there too for second best claim, but also the Bulgarians hosted the Anand-Topalov world championship with big sponsorship money. Topalov played fair and his fighting spirit was admirable.

Peter, Please improve 'underd the name' to 'under the name'.

Topy demand $80,000 appearence fee everytime he participates. No wonder organizers are not putting up with that.

"he was the challenger and so theortically the second best after Anand, ok Kramnik is there too for second best claim"

Is it really that clear that Kramnik is a better player today than Carlsen is? The Norwegian can't be that far behind looking at their results over the last years.
