Corus Press Conferences Rounds 6-8

Corus Chess Round 6-8 Press ConferencesAnish Giri also did the press conference after his round 6 win with Black against Tomi Nyback. A day later, Hikaru Nakamura showed his victory against Alexei Shirov. Yesterday it was Vladimir Kramnik's turn and the Russian was in great shape, answering lots of questions afterwards honestly and joyfully. Enjoy!

(Never mind the intro's that say "Round 1 Jan Smeets...", we'll correct that later.)

awesome interview! Really makes me like Kramnik.

great videos. so sad that we have to watch the corporate video commercial at the beginning. oh well... take the good w/ the bad i guess. could i also put in a suggestion for a new musical director? the dramatic synthesizer is pretty awful.. apologies for all the whining. thanks for all;the great work.

Wow, has it already been two years that ChessVibes showed these press conferences online? It still is one of the nicest things on the web for chess fans. It gives me this brief moment of understanding what's going on in a game. Especially in Kramnik's presentation.

I don't know whether the verbally diarrheic voice over, the fact that it advertises Coors Beer and is -- like most chemically laden Yankee swill -- some of the worst beer in the world, or that it advertises the 2010 Olympics, a big overhyped corporate circus paid for in part by my tax dollars with no benefit to the most of the citizens of British Columbia, that is the most annoying part of the ad that appears at the beginning of these videos. I understand that ChessVibes uses the revenue from these irritating spots to produce this excellent site, and that corporate sponsorship is the way of the world, but the ads are still irksome.

So, in defense, here is my ad. The world needs to know that there is considerable dissatisfaction with the 2010 Olympics on the part of the citizens of BC, many of whom decry the waste of money that could be devoted to social programs like cleaning Vancouver's East End, one of the world's worst urban ghettos, peopled by heroin addicts, crack whores, and the homeless, many of whom are mentally ill and on the street as a direct result of cutbacks to social programs by the same right wing government that is hyping the olympics.

Laws curtailing personal freedoms and the right to free speech have been enacted here to ensure that citizens who planned to exercise their democratic right to protest the Olympics will not get within sight of the cameras of the international media.

As I write this, there is grass poking through the snow at Whistler and Olympic organizers are hastily manufacturing snow to cover the slopes at Cypress Bowl in what should be the coldest most snow laden part of the year, but isn't anymore thanks to climate change.

So, resist Coors' Beer Coozie, stay away from Corporate Beer, and boycott the 2010 corporate Olympics.

Thanks a lot for these videos!

Finally!

Thanks guys.

The chessvibes logo is quite annoying...

Lauri's picture

Is there particular reason why I don't get this videos to run or is it just me?

What a class act Kramnik is. Nearly as talented as King Kasparov but so better socially. He is without doubt the #1 player in the world, above even Chucky and definitely the runt.....when he plays him as white it will be clear.

Sergio's picture

Thank you, i really like the persconferences. I liked to hear Giri say for the first time he missed things and i liked the long questiontime with Kramnick

CAL|Daniel's picture

@jazzkoo I disagree. I very much like the music.

Nietzsche's picture

Kramnik is such a 1. class guy! He seems like a very nice person and his chess understandig is beyond almost anybody else on this planet. Over the years I have become quiet a huge fan of him, so I always enjoy watching him speak.

Mike's picture

Thanks for this great video..! As I suspected, Kramnik clear explanations show that, in spite of the extreme and "agressive" appearance of the advanced black pawns display, in fact since the beginning, due to this early commitment, black forces are in fact fighting to save the game, and not attacking for a win...Black has praiseworthy intentions, but I think that against Kramnik it was necessary a better positional foundation before any attack, or even to adopt some long term positional strategy.

It is great to watch these videos from the press conferences. But I would for sure like to get rid of the commercial during the chess parts of it. The way the society is running for the time being, there is no way we can rid of them completely, sad to say.
One question: How can it be that Corus, one of the most sophisticated and well organised tournaments around, is still using these oldfashioned demonstraion boards?
Several times during almost all the conferences the players drops pieces to the floor. And most of the time the players have to turn their faces away from the audience.

Hortensius's picture

These board are part of the Corus charm if you ask me...

unknown's picture

I love this board. I wanna have one at hime.

I have been always fan of Anand but this Kramnik is diffrent who is so logic and realistic like Rembrand and with a british touch of humor and he is man to beat in coming years and a free advice to naka. please watch the video and learn because you just arrived and don't forget names MC and GIRI for the future and good luck

Radical Caveman's picture

He may play a lot of draws, but Kramnik is a cool fella.

British fan's picture

Robson's first place 2578 performance is misleading. He's playing only 8 points over his rating, only played the under 2500 players so far, and lost to one of them.

Rini Luyks's picture

Kramnik's game is a masterpiece, followed by a masterclass at the pressconference. The Rb1-idea seems to be very good against the Dutch Defence, also in he other (...Qe8) Leningrad-variation and even against the Stonewall.
Maybe it´s some kind of prophecy that the crown in the ChessVibes logo is moving around his head all the time during the video :), he still can win the tournament, but being black against Carlsen, Anand and Shirov it will not be easy, as he already said.

Garnoth's picture

Kramnik has clearly changed his playing style and is taking more risks, he is playing some awesome games lately! I think he will still be a dangerous contender for the world championship for years to come.

He and Aronian are for me the ones who give the best press conferences, clear explanations but still they delve deeply into the positions, great stuff!

vaughn's picture

1.the logo is anoyng for me.
2.this Giri is suffering, like a lot of chess players,by inculture.

VladimirOo's picture

When tired of playing - the later, the better, of course -, Kramnik would make a wonderful teacher for young talents: so deep, so powerful, and so many knowledge in all aspects of the game!

Hortensius's picture

Apparently computers are better teachers than human beings...

unknown's picture

Kramnik won again! Against Carlsen!

Sergio's picture

Hortentius, i disagree. I like beeing teached by a human way more then a computer. Computers are nice aid to analyse you game, but they just give lines. They can't explain you the deeper purposes off moves like Kramnick can.

Rothschild's picture

You are of course right, sergio. But I believe that when these players reach a certain high level, they can use the lines generated by computers and understand the ideas for themselves. I sure can't with some lines suggested, but Im sure the computer is a much better teacher to them than it is for me. It's the principle of "zone of proximal development" stated long ago by Lev Vygotsky; it would mean that a 900 player profits very much learning from a 1200 player, 1200 from a 1500 player, etc.... and a 2700+ player is ready to actually learn from Rybka ;-)

leandro's picture

f5??
straight??? in this level????
Who Nakamura think he is???
Someone spent the whole night telling he is bobby fischer???

This was a well deserved loss.
This is a lesson for naka stops playing so arrogantly
I bet Kramnik gave him a good lesson. I bet he thought playing e4 after the numb f5

Nice interview,,, nice class... really a show
I like Kramnik best... I hope he'll win Corus this year and jump at least to 2nd place in ranking.

well done
