Corus R3: Sharp opening battles

Van Wely chatting with Aronian, just before his game against SmeetsThe third round of Corus 2009 promises to be full of razor sharp opening battles. Will Jan Smeets hold on to his leading position with the Botvinnik Variation? Just like yesterday, ChessVibes will provide regular updates and photos. Update added 17:45

Clearly, the game to start with is Loek van Wely vs. Jan Smeets: a very interesting Botvinnik Variation indeed! Smeets deviated from a rapid game Van Wely-Shirov, Monaco 2005 with 19...Bxe7 and produced a novelty on move 21: before, 21...Qc6 was always played in this position. Both players seems to follow Rybka's main line after this. Its evaluation, meaningless though it may be, is +.0.52 for White after 27.Re2! (Instead, Loek already chose for perpetual check.)

Another game to follow closely is Ivanchuk-Radjabov, where Black avoided the main lines by going for 9...Ne8, which was answered by the not so popular 10.a4; 12.Bg5 seems to be the new move here. And what to think of the tactical endgame Aronian and Stellwagen are playing? After 18 moves, a surprisingly dynamic balance seems to have been established. Carlsen-Movsesian is a very principled Bishops vs. Knights fight, reminiscent of some classic Chigorin games.

karjakin-wangyueIt looks like a tough round in general, with games that basically still have to start. Karjakin-Wang Yue and Adams-Dominguez are the always-exciting Sicilians of this round. Finally, today's Ruy Lopez comes from Movsesian Morozevich and Kamsky. That game is analysed live (in Russian) by Sergey Shipov.

Update 16:40

Two games that we were enthusiastic about, have already finished: Van Wely-Smeets and Aronian-Stellwagen. So, again, the Dutch stay out of trouble. Also, Carlsen-Movsesian was a relatively quick draw. Ivanchuk is gaining more and more space against Radjabov, but Black's position looks solid so far. Needless to say, the computer likes White in this kind of positions. Meanwhile, Kamsky has beaten Morozevich, who had made some very dubious decisions in the early middle game (17...Nxg4 and 19...exd4) and susequently had to pay the price. The American showed his game in the press room in record tempo, but we've got it on video. As to the other games in Group A, we''ll really have to wait until time-trouble sets in.

Short-l'AmiIn Group B, Short had an easy day against Erwin L'Ami, who never solved his opening problems. Again, it must be noted, ancient lines seem to do the trick! In an interview with ChessVibes, Short admitted he was extra motivated when he heard that L'Ami is actually Cheparinov's second... And just like last year, this little bit of extra went fine for the Englishman.

Update 17:45

Radjabov caused the first real shock of the day by suddenly beating Ivanchuk with Black. It seems Ivanchuk simply blundered in time trouble (38.Rxc7?? instead of 38.Rg3 which is OK according to the computer) but admittedly, the position was so complicated that Radjabov definitely deserves credit for it. Meanwhile, Adams is still pushing against Dominguez; Karjakin-Wang Yue is still going on, too. Here we find it impossible to say who's better. (In the end, both games ended in a draw.)

Kasimdzhanov proved his good form by scoring another fine victory in Group B, and in C, of course, Ali Bitalzadeh's win over Gupta cannot go unnoticed on our site. Manuel Bosboom, who must be the most popular Dutchman in all three groups, retains his leading position in Group C by drawing Romanishin with Black. He was joined by ICC qualifier Eduardo Iturrizaga, who's also on 2.5/3.

Peter;
The cross table for group B is missing.
Also a little typo in the text when you talk about Kamsky-Movsesian instead of Moro.
And if you manage to talk to them, I'd like to know if Romanishin is trying to get into group B next year; and why Volokitin is playing such dull games!
Good luck with the coverage!

Peter Doggers's picture

Thx, corrected. The typo was Arne's, btw. ;-)

And... I'm afraid that those two questions aren't the ones I'd like to ask these players, risking answers like "doh!" and "what??".

sjoerd's picture

Fire Arne;) ! And about my questions, you may have a point there:p . I'd like to see interviews with them though, interesting players.

Thomas's picture

@Arne: Of course I agree, and I didn't raise doubts on the quality of _Kamsky's_ play ... but I still wouldn't call it a high-quality _game_ because that would require high(er) quality from both sides.
Was Wang Yue-Ivanchuk a high-quality game? No, too many mistakes from both players .... .
Was Short-l'Ami a high-quality game? No, much too one-sided ... .
Yet both games were very entertaining.

So what would be a high-quality game?? Maybe a fighting draw, with attack and defense (and/or counterattack) being at par ... .

Michael's picture

Yasser Seirawan is also from the US and he called Kamsky-Moro "a terrible game" (not Kamsky's fault, of course, but he could hardly avoid winning). Moro always tries to do something special and sometimes this goes awfully wrong. But never mind, in many cases it works well and it's a pleasure to watch his creative chess.

Arne Moll's picture

It's a very sympathetic point of view towards Moro, Michael, but perhaps we should also acknowledge that when Moro's 'something special' is punished like it was yesterday, some people opportunistically do not call it 'something special' anymore, but something 'terrible'... :-)

Thomas's picture

Next American view by Dennis Monokroussos (The Chess Mind):
"Morozevich ... allowed White to whip up a deadly attack without having to do anything too special. The result was a massacre."
[Mig Greengard still has to give his opinion ...]

Arne Moll's picture

@Thomas. A chess game cannot be won without help from the opponent ;-) Anyway, Susan Polgar calls Kamksy's game a 'masterpiece' and even if we allow for some USA-patriotism, I think it says something about the quality of his play.

vaughn's picture

chuky loses again due time trouble like in first round;with a little more attention his score should be 3-0,leading the tournament;anyway gogo chuky!

Jonas's picture

It looks like Ivanchuk likes adrenaline flooding in to his system and he subconsciously goes in to timetrouble by himself.
He must feel a lot of pleasure playing chess otherwise he would't play that much and time trouble gives him even more plesure :)
That explains why he wastes time at the beginning of every game.

Also he plays very good even in hude time trouble, allmost in every tournament there is a game when Ivanchuk makes 10 moves in 10 seconds... but i never remember that Ivanchuck lost ga game by time.

christos (greece)'s picture

Thank you for the report. But where is the table of the standings from group B? I see the group C standings twice.

bob's picture

wow both hthe players who lost in round one both won in round two now both lost in round three lolz

Thomas's picture

Not sure if Kasmky-Morozevich was such high quality ... . Nice game by Kamsky, no doubt about it, but [if the above report is correct ,:) ] with quite some help from his opponent's dubious decisions.
As far as I can tell, Ivanchuk-Radjabov had 37 high quality moves (from both sides) followed by a horrible time-trouble blunder. Well, chess cannot be both entertaining and perfect !!??

Alexander's picture

The quality of play in this tournament seems somewhat lower than usual!

Arne Moll's picture

Well, Alexander, it's a bit early to judge I suppose. But anyway, we've already seen a lot of high-quality games in my opinion: today's victory by Gata Kamsky, for example.

Ismar Irenick R. Estrella's picture

Ivanchuk loses again due to time trouble!! What is happening to him in this tournament? It seems that he spent so much time for his moves I assume. As in this tournament he did again blundered before the first time control! Only Chucky can tell us about these unfortunate circumstances!
