CVT 65: the pawn steamroller, the '4th phase', rook endings and a column by top GM Anish Giri

ChessVibes Training #65

The latest issue of ChessVibes Training, our weekly PDF & PGN magazine with middlegame and endgame lessons, is a great example of the diversity in training material that's offered every week. CVT 65 contains the following:

Giri's grab bag – top GM Anish Giri gives a detailed analysis of the top encounter in the recent Dutch Championship: Giri-Sokolov, Amsterdam 2012.

Guess the move – IM Merijn van Delft presents another example of the 'pawn steamroller'. At the Leiden Chess Tournament Parimarjan Negi of India created a new masterpiece, against Bartosz Socko of Poland.

Guidelines in the jungle – IM Arthur van de Oudeweetering talks about the "4th phase" in chess, when only queens and rooks remain. It appears the terminology originates from Pyotr Romanovsky, who examined a lot of major piece positions in a book he wrote about the middlegame. These positions have characteristics of both the middlegame and the endgame, hence Romanovsky thought up the name 4th phase. Van de Oudeweetering gives a number of instructive examples.

Tactics, tactics – IM Robert Ris carefully selected 12 new tactical exercises, arranged in an increasing level of difficulty. Regular tactical training is highly important to maintain your top form!

Practical endings – IM Robert Ris returns to an important topic: anticipating rook versus pawn endings. Rook endgames often lead to a rook versus pawn battle where the result depends on a single tempo. Ris gives three illustrative examples, focusing on text rather than variations and, as always, providing useful guidelines.

What is ChessVibes Training?

Every issue consists of a PDF Magazine and the accompanying PGN file. The PDF consists of eight pages (A4 size) with the following contents:

  • Giri's Grab Bag - A weekly column by GM Anish Giri in which he tells about his tournament practice and his excitement and worries during a top level chess game.
  • Guess the move - A weekly game quiz by IM Merijn van Delft that gives you the opportunity to solve problems that GMs couldn't. What move did they play? Can you calculate as deeply? Give it a try and see how many points you score this week!
  • Guidelines in the jungle - Every week IM Arthur van de Oudeweetering discusses a feature of chess strategy. Lessons are drawn from both very recent and old games, played by club players as well as grandmasters. Get ready to really play the game when your opening knowledge stops!
  • Tactics, tactics - 12 tactical exercises carefully selected by IM Robert Ris, arranged in increasing level. Regular tactical training is highly important to maintain your top form, and now it will be easier than ever with new diagrams delivered in your mailbox every week!
  • Practical endings - IM Robert Ris gives a clear explanation of a recent endgame played by strong players, focusing on text rather than variations. Every week a typical endgame theme is discussed, sometimes with the emphasis on the theory, but always providing you with useful guidelines.
