ECC R6: St Petersburg loses to Socar, it's anyone's game in Eilat

ECC R6: Socar beats St Petersburg, it's anyone's game in Eilat

In a dramatic penultimate round, St Petersburg lost its first match at the European Club Cup. They went down 2.5-3.5 to Socar as Alexander Grischuk beat Sergei Movsesian. These two teams now share the lead with Tomsk-400 and Ashdod and in today's last round everything will be decided: Socar vs Tomsk and Ashdod vs St. Petersburg. By contrast, the fight for the first place in the women's event has been decided. Monte-Carlo clinched the gold medals with a round to spare after winning all of their first six matches. Ugra is placed second and have already secured (at least) bronze. The last round starts Wednesday 10:30 CET!

Location Eilat, Israel
System 6-player round robin
Players Top players include Radjabov, Nakamura, Ivanchuk, Morozevich, Kamsky, Grischuk, Topalov, Mamedyarov, Wang Hao, Svidler, Gelfand, Ponomariov, Dominguez, Leko, Wojtaszek, Jakovenko, Giri, Volokitin, Navara, Adams
Rate of play

90 minutes for 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move, starting from move one.

Extra Players are not allowed to offer a draw before move 40. The zero tolerance rule for arriving at the board is in effect

Just when we wrote that St Petersburg made a big step towards gold, they lost their first match. But perhaps it wasn't that far from the truth, because the team led by Peter Svidler still has a clear tie-break advantage over the other three leaders. Socar caught the leaders in the direct confrontation, while Ahsdod and Tomsk got to 10 match points by beating Economist and Ugra respectively.

Svidler-Radjabov, Mamedyarov-Dominuez, Vitiugov-Topalov, Efimenko-Kamsky and Sutovsky-Zvjaginsev were all drawn and so the decisive game in the top match of round 6 was the following.

The battle between Economist-SGSEU Saratov and Ashdod also saw five draws in the games Andreikin-Ivanchuk, Volokitin-Nepomniachtchi, Alekseev-Eljanov, Tomashevsky-Romanov and Avrukh-Moiseenko. Also here the decision fell on board 4:

Tomsk-400 was clearly too strong for Ugra (4.5-1.5) and the difference was even bigger for SHSM-64 who beat Zurich 5-1. In the match Baden-Baden vs Gambit Aseko IM Orce Dancevski (2389) was rewarded for his fearless attack:

Round 6 in Eilat, with Gros Xake Taldea's Loek van Wely and Christian Bauer

An interesting pairing was Hikaru Nakamura vs Simon Williams (Obiettive Risarcimento vs Jutes of Kent). Earlier in the tournament Williams had beaten Boris Gelfand with the Dutch Defence, and Nakamura sometimes plays the Dutch himself. However, after 1.d4 e6 the American switched to 2.e4 and then took on d5 the next move. He nicely used his bishop pair to eventually catch the black king in a mating net.

In the women's section Cercle d'Echecs de Monte-Carlo crushed Rishon Le-Zion 4-0 and with six victories the Monaco team has secured gold with a round to spare.

Ugra club, who kept chances for gold until the sixth round, lost 1-3 to SHSM-Nashe Nasledie. Still in second place, the Ugra ladies have already secured the bronze medals but can try to fight for silver on Wednesday. Mika won against Ashdot and is in third place.

The last round starts Wednesday 10:30 CET!

Grischuck seems like the revenge type of guy

Anonymous's picture

Am I the only one that thinks Grischuk's 39.Kh5 was a brilliant move deserving at least one exclamation mark?

Niima's picture

It surely is a nice move.

Anonymous's picture

Just like Judit Polgar, Grischuk tries hard, but he'll never be a contender. He should follow Paco's trail.

Niima's picture

Inept statement and comparison.

Daniel's picture

Nice comeback by Topa! He is right back in the top 10

Excalibur's picture

Anonymous: What an idiotic comment! Grischuk not a contender? He is probably the strongest player in Russia right now along with Kramnik and could have faced Anand if he wasn't careless against Gelfand in their match.

Chris's picture

strongest russian player is Jakovenko.
