Eljanov is Ukraine's number one

Magnus Carlsen (2813) tops the world rankings by one point. On the May 1 FIDE rating list Veselin Topalov has won seven rating points to reach 2812. Vassily Ivanchuk is not the highest rated Ukrainian anymore; Pavel Eljanov confirmed his steady progress and surpassed him to enter the world's top 10. And Alexei Shirov is back there too.

FIDE published its May 1st rating list and this time there's not a big difference between the official top 10 and the "live" top 10 of Hans Arild Runde (which you can also find in the far right column on this website). Only Anand's and Topalov's ratings are different because of the current World Championship match: virtually speaking Topalov has dropped back to 2806 and Anand is just 3.6 points away from the 2800 barrier.

eljanovThe biggest news this time is that Vassily Ivanchuk isn't Ukraine's number one player anymore, for the first time in years. Winning another 15 points in 20 games, on the May 2010 list Pavel Eljanov has reached a 9th spot, while Ivanchuk lost seven points and dropped slightly from 11 to 12.

With solid results in not so many games Wang Yue climbed from 10 to 8, and the 10th place is now occupied by Alexei Shirov. Boris Gelfand is out of the top 10 again but only lost 9 rating points. Sergey Karjakin might see the first results of his switch of federations and trainers: he climbed from 21 to 14. Alexander Morozevich didn't play this period but still dropped three places, to 27 now. Anand's seconds Rustam Kasimdzhanov and Peter Heine Nielsen can be found next to each other on the list: numbers 39 and 40.

One of the biggest climbers was Ian Nepomniachtchi, who won no less than 39 points and went up from 78 to 42. Reaching 97, Anish Giri is a top 100 player for the first time.

The women's list has been stable for a long time now, with very few changes in the top 10. Both Judit Polgar and Humpy Koneru didn't play, so the gap is still 60 points. Below you'll find the new top 100, the top 100 women, the top 20 juniors and the top 20 girls. We give the first two lists including the changes with the previous lists. All data courtesy of FIDE.

Nice to see Anish Giri in the top ten juniors, being the youngest by far...

Surprising to see Eljanov and Wang Yue in the top of the world!.

Ratings (Top 100) are incomplete as FM Vladimir Afromeev, Elo 2646, (http://ratings.fide.com/card.phtml?event=4157770) is missing. Guess he is pausing and playing with his cat, FM Kitten.

top 100 player, top 10 youth, top 5 live commentators, way to go, Anish Giri!

damn Moro is not doing very well, but I guess that is normal for such type of player. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the top 5 again in a few months

This just shows how nonsensical these ratings are. Eljanov is not even in the same league as Chucky.....What a farce. He is a typical modern journeyman GM like Legoland and the American semi slant to name but a few.

Ivanchuk is the first in our hearts....

And is impressive to see Giri, but more the difference of Hou Yifan....

Antichrist's picture

Eljanov is much stronger than Ivanchuk - Chucky blows the win all the time but consistent and steady Eljanov steam rolls the opposition in 'slow motion slaughter' style!

Ukraine's catching up to Russia as well in playing strength. China up to 3rd place on the rankings, Israel dropped from 3rd to 5th, and India surged ahead from 8th to 4th. There you go.

Well, Antichrist, you are comparing Eljanov´s progress in the last two years to a whole career in Ivanchuk´s case. I don´t think it´s possible to say that Eljanov is a better player on the whole just because of this. In my opinion at Eljanov´s age Ivanchuk had achieved more than him, i.e. winning Linares, but if Eljanov´s progress carries on in the following years then you might be able to compare, but IMO it is still too early.

While I don't want to criticize Peter Doggers for his headline (the idea is to make more people actually click on the link?), I think it's too early to draw major conclusions either way - as ceann and Antichrist did:
- The 10 point gap between Eljanov and Ivanchuk is rather insignificant
- It is too early to say whether Eljanov (as well as Mamedyarov) are in the top10 to stay there. For example, Movsesian was also "visiting" in the recent past but is down to #25 again.

Eljanov's recent rating gain is mostly from team events where he didn't face many 2700+ players (but did well against the 2500-2700 range). It's interesting to compare Eljanov's and Ivanchuk's scores against Anand, Aronian, Carlsen, Gelfand, Grischuk, Kramnik, Svidler and Topalov (since October 2007, source FIDE rating pages);
Ivanchuk +17=72-20
Eljanov +4=12-4
Somewhat surprisingly (as far as I am concerned), Eljanov did relatively a bit better, but I think his sample is too small to be meaningful. He should now get more top-level invitations (the ones he had were mostly the FIDE GP events), and then we'll know how strong he really is?

The headline simply summarizes the biggest news of the rating list.

The ELO rating list DO have very sensible chess meaning. That have NOTHING to do with career, nor with fan preferences.
At this moment, from the list (and also from Thomas interesting statistics), it is (slightly) better to bet on Eljanov. He is being a (slightly) STRONGER chess player. Just that.
For me and for now, Ivanchuk is a far more important chess player, and I like his play very much. But THAT is a totaly different matter.

Thomas's picture

I see your point, Peter, and I was mostly referring to the discussion it provoked. And it's often forgotten that a 10 point gap doesn't mean much.

I wonder if the "biggest news" will also turn out to be lasting news, regarding both "Eljanov enters top 10" and "Eljanov is Ukraine's number one". Ukraine now has three players very close to each other (would be four if Karjakin hadn't switched federations), and Ponomariov may well turn out to be their #1 in the next list? Same situation for Azerbaijan BTW: Radjabov was clear #1 for a long time, then Gashimov went up and a bit down again, then Mamedyarov.

Looking at where, how and against whom the other big winners (which you did mention) gained their rating points, I would personally consider Karjakin (Russian Team Championship) and Nepomnichtchi (European individual championship) more impressive - but this doesn't show up in the bare ciphers ... .

And we don't have lasting news all the time, as for the Nov2009 (Carlsen crosses 2800) and Jan2010 lists (Carlsen becomes #1).

Maybe I am also a bit skeptical because I still hardly know Eljanov as a player. Could be my fault, but what about a feature on him here? Of course I know that you're currently busy in Sofia and doing a fine job - keep up the good work and stay focused for the time being! :)
