World Cup live: twee remisesWorld Cup live: two draws
Kamsky's 5...bxc6 is zeldzaam.[/lang_nl][lang_en]The first games of the World Cup's semi-finals have both ended in a draw. Shirov tried his luck with 6.Bg5 against Karjakin's Najdorf, and at first didn't have to be unsatisfied. His knights were keeping Black's queenside on hold and so he could think about a careful try for a win. Carlsen showed a versatile repertoire and against Kamsky he opted for the Scotch. His rare 5.Nxc6 (after 5...Bc5) doesn't look that frightening for the American. Correction: 5.Nxc6 is perfectly normal of course and almost always answered by 5...Qf6. Kamsky's 5...bxc6 is rare.[/lang_en]
Kb5 Ke5 42. c4 bxc3 43. Rxc3 f4 44. gxf4+ Kxf4 wat remise is.
14:24 | Na 41...Ke5 schudden de spelers elkaar al de hand. Shirov-Karjakin ook remise.[/lang_nl][lang_en]Here the live reporting during the games:
12:40 | In Carlsen-Kamsky the queens have been exchanged and this game might well end in a draw soon. But who knows, White's structure is slightly better so perhaps he'll give it a try.
12:50 | I have the feeling Black is quite comfortable actually, in Carlsen-Kamsky. Vishy Anand, who drew his game against Wojtaszek already and for a moment sits next to me behind a laptop, also thinks so. :)
12:57 | After Shirov's Re1-f1, Karjakin went for a long think now.
13:14 | After 20 moves, Carlsen's pieces look a bit clumsy. Black is more than comfortable now.
13:38 | ...but with White's b3-b4! all clumsyness was gone and so were anybody's winning chances. Carlsen-Kamsky draw.
13:49 | Karjakin's long thought paid of because he did find a way to break White's bind on the queenside. The line that starts with 22.Bxd6 now leads to a very drawish endgame by force.
14:00 | This line was played indeed. Again, it won't take long anymore, I guess.
14:13 | It has become a rook ending that's not so dull as I expected. But still drawish.
14:21 | The players have made move 40. A logical line is 41. Kb5 Ke5 42. c4 bxc3 43. Rxc3 f4 44. gxf4+ Kxf4 which is a draw.
14:24 | After 41...Ke5 the players already shook hands. Shirov-Karjakin also drawn.[/lang_en]

If you can make a draw that easily with a move like 5...bxc6...then chess will be nearly dead. Please readers of Chessvibes, give us the refutation of 5...bc6.

5. Pxc6 is toch volstrekt normaal... 5..,bc6 is wat minder gebruikelijk volgens mij

Of course 5...bxc6 can't be refuted nor should it be condemned because it's less popular. In fact, I would say that 5...Qf6 definitely looks weirder. The black queen seems much beter placed at h4, as in Carlsens game!

What is wrong actually with 5.Be3 rather than Pxc6? Or is it fashion ruling again?

@Arne Exactly! In the ages before Kasparov popularized the Scotch, Qf6 was known as the "refutation" of 5.Nxc6 "?!". As a youngster I learned this from some even older booklet. The first time somebody played this Nxc6 against, I boldly played Qf6, thinking something like "Hah, is that a nasty surprise!". Disappointingly, Qf6 did not lead to an advantage for black...
Nowadays I fail to see why Qf6 should be preferable to bxc6. Especially in blitz 5.,bxc6 is rather attractive, because of the simple plan Qh4,Nf6-g4 and mate ;-)

Why should 5. ... bxc6 be refutable? It is certainly not an absurd, nor even ugly, move.

Maybe Carlsen should have played 3 Bb5 or really shocked Kamsky with 2 f4.

Perhaps Kamsky's choice has something to do with the recent Savchenko games in the World Blitz Cup 2007. Of course it was "only" blitz, but i think Savchenko worked very, very hard on this opening, because despite beeing rated "only" 2583 his results after 5?¢‚Ǩ¬¶Qf6 with white are impressive:
Boris Savchenko vs Shakhriyar Mamedyarov 1:0
Boris Savchenko vs Peter Leko 1/2:1/2
Boris Savchenko vs Alexander Grischuk 1:0
Boris Savchenko vs Vladimir Kramnik 1/2:1/2
I'm sure Carlsen took a close look at the current developments in the Scotch and I understand Kamsky, if he didn't want to test what a 27xx rated Carlsen can achieve with a "Savchenko-preparation".
As a Scotch fan i hope the 5?¢‚Ǩ¬¶Qf6 debate continues at corus, when everybody had some time to come up with new ideas!
