ICC releases iPhone app

ICC releases iPhone appIt was about time, with dozens of chess apps already available for the highly popular iPhone from Apple. Since Thursday, August 12 the official Internet Chess Club (ICC) app "Chess at ICC" is available in the App Store. You can play and observe games, or play against an engine.

A random search for chess currently gives over 500 results in the App Store, the service created by Apple that allows users to browse and download applications for their iPhone, iPod Touch and/or iPad. Until Thursday a week ago, a big one was missing there: the official ICC app. The popular online chess club, with over 30,000 active members (amongst them many super grandmasters), now allows you to play and observe games with a native appplication on the iPhone.

This first release offers a mixture of online and offline features. One can play rated or unrated games at the ICC over Wifi and 3G on the iPhone. One can also observe games being played, and chat with other observers. Besides, there's an in-built computer engine to play against. After playing the games are stored, and one can replay previously played games.

The price for the ICC iPhone app is US $0.99 or EUR 0.79. Currently there's an introductory special offer where anyone who chooses a new username collects a 30 day membership of ICC. Besides, they're offering ICC access via the iPhone app for $0.99 a month.

A few enhancements to this first version will be added in coming weeks, among them an easy way to find and watch live games from top events.

For the moment ICC is not developing anything for other mobile platforms, but they are in touch with a couple of third party apps that connect to ICC. At the moment, for Android you can find a paid one here and a free one here (still in development / beta released). For Windows Phone 7 there's a paid app here (still in development).

You can find a demo of the ICC iPhone app here.

I think the app is a good start, but I am missing access to the the console.

In practical terms, currently you cannot observe or play games against specific players. It is all random. The app is therefore also useless for team events like Team4545 League. But anyway, it is great that the ICC has put such efforts and money into the iPhone platform.

I've tried both and found that Chessbase (playchess.com) beats ICC hands down, no contest. It's beyond me what anyone sees in ICC. It's more expensive and the interface is terrible compared to Chessbase.

Chessbase does neither support Macs nor iPhones. Also Team4545 is a great asset for ICC.

I have to admit I never used playchess on fritz or any other paid chessbase product, but judging from what I get with the free client, ICC's server AND software are way way better. Dasher experience isn't great, but BlitzIn has no match, it is the best.

ICC all the way!

Chessbase is simply disgusting, starting from their sensationalist (and sexist) reporting and ending with their greedy money making strategies.

I have to agree with Thorn. And not only that recently chessbase introduced pop-ups in their website which is extremely annoying spam. I am not using that website or products anymore.

Honestly , it is true many chessbase products are sometimes ridiculously overpriced ( probably because they know they almost have a monopoly on chess softwares and dvd ) , but concerning playchess.com , in my humble opinion , it is the best place for playing online , it is much less expensive than ICC , and the interface is better , the service is of a better quality from what i've tested , i play on playchess since years and tried ICC for a few months , i also used to play on the FICS for some time .

I really don't understand people saying Blitzin is better than Chessbase interface , for me it's clear that Chessbase interface is more refined in all aspects honestly

Anyways , i tried both , i do not work for any company , and i think that ICC should seriously consider lowering their membership price because it's really not justified to pay Twice more money than on playchess.com for a service and quality obviously inferior to Chessbase ..

Anyways , for the Iphone , i'm happy that ICC thought about it because i intend to purchase one , so far i was using the Palm TX in conjunction with Chess Tiger (got boring after a while to play against the same engine everytime though , always same style and openings ) , so it's a good news to see that happen

Firstly, let me admit that I haven't actually purchased this app,my comments are based on marketing information, reviews and the online demo. I would welcome correction if I have misunderstood the functions of this product.

I have an iTouch and have purchased most of the leading chess apps, but I really feel that ICC have missed an opportunity here. As I would imagine they have the largest subscription-paying membership in the chess world I really thought they would produce a killer app, but they have hugely disappointed me. As far as I can see the app offers only online play and game observation, and even those features have limited functionality. Why not the ability to view chess fm videos? In my opinion this is one of the strengths of ICC membership over Playchess. I really can't see a reason to spend even 59p (uk) for an app that offers nothing that can't be found elsewhere (and which has quite bad reviews). For example, have they looked at what is on offer from chess.com (which, by the way, is free) ? I feel that if I buy this app the folks at ICC might interpret it as a vote of support which it doesn't deserve.

I have tried both ChessBase and ICC. In my experience ICC is better - the interface is more user-friendly and the video lectures more frequent and diverse. I used to be a ChessBase member and switched to ICC - it has been worth the extra membership fee.

In reply to many here, let me inform you that in the next couple of weeks there will be a big upgrade coming to the ICC iPhone App which should please many of you who are asking for it to do specific things. And as for Kev, you have to realize Kev that this is an iPhone App, and we at ICC (or anyone else, for that matter) simply can't cram every resource we have into the one app (especially our first!), such as Chess.FM content. However, that said, we are working on an additional app for the coming months that will allow access to Chess.FM content.

Please remember that this is all a new area for us at ICC to be involved with. I simply ask everyone not to expect everything at the one time - but regardless of this, we do very much value your opinions (good or indifferent) and feedback of what you want in an ICC iPhone App.
