Iordachescu on 5/5 in Bad Wiessee

Viorel Iordachescu started strongly at this year’s Bavaria Championship in Bad Wiessee. The Moldavian grandmaster began with five wins in as many games, and leads with half a point ahead of no less than sixteen players, including GMs Gupta, Rozentalis and Jussupow.

The 13th Open Bavaria Chess Championship takes place October 31-November 8 in Bad Wiessee, Germany, about 50 km south of Munich. As we read on the tournament website, one great surprise is the unprecedented participation by ‘Russian Bear’ Artur Jussupow, who founded the tournament together with his partner Horst Leckner in 1997 and has been supporting it with his expert advice.

Organisational responsibilities as well as other duties including his chess academy never permitted him to partake in the competition. Jussupow has played many international tournaments for his country in the past and was represented in Wiessee by his daughter Ekaterina and others – the latter fulfilled the criteria for the Woman International Master title last year.

Jusspow is but one of over 400 participants who enjoy a strong tournament and at the same time a great holiday on the shores of picturesque Lake Tegernsee (venue is the 65 metre long Wandelhalle). This year’s top seeds include Igor Khenkin (2613), Viorel Iordachescu (2607) and Eduardas Rozentalis (2603). After the Univé Tournament in Hoogeveen and spending a few days in Amsterdam the two American GMs Josh Friedel (2555) and Jesse Kraai (2526) are also to be found behind the chess board again.

After five rounds Iordachescu is the only player left with a 100% score. Below you can find a selection of games from the first five rounds.
