Ivanchuk re-enters top 10 on new FIDE rating list
Following its new policy of publishing six instead of four rating lists a year, FIDE already made available the September rating list today. The top 10 didn't change much; Jakovenko is out but after a great summer Vassily Ivanchuk is back in; the Ukrainian climbed from spot 30th all the way up to 8th place.
The top 10 of the FIDE's September rating list is almost identical to the "live list" by Hans Arild Runde which you can also find in the far right column on this website. The difference is that FIDE rounded off Boris Gelfand's and Vassily Ivanchuk's rating to 2756, and in this case Ivanchuk 'wins' because of a higher number of played games. In any case, it's interesting to note that the only two players in the top 10 over 40 years old, are having the same rating at the moment.
We can safely use the synonym "Russia's number one player" again for Vladimir Kramnik after Dmitry Jakovenko dropped from 5th to 11th place. Ruslan Ponomariov is slowly but surely getting closer to the elite again and the biggest winner at the top, besides Ivanchuk, is Hikaru Nakamura of course, although in the meantime he already lost many points in Amsterdam this week.
We find Nigel Short back in the world's top 30 but Rustam Kasimdzhanov climbed even more, from 58th to 31st. Kamsky went down considerably, from 18th to 38th. After finishing shared first at both Politiken and Zurich (winning two last-round games with Black!) Boris Avrukh went from place 100 to 60.
In the women's list the top 6 stayed the same; Pia Cramling climbed from 10th to 6th place, behind Judit Polgar, Humpy Koneru, Hou Yifan, Zhao Xue and Tatiana Kosintseva. Sergei Zhigalko entered the Juniors top 10 and Harika Dronavalli is now 4th in the Girls list.
Below you'll find the new top 100, the top 100 women, the top 20 juniors and the top 20 girls. We give the first two lists including the changes with the previous lists. All data courtesy of FIDE.

I know. And we imported him. But we are only a small country. You are so much bigger! :-P
It's a shame that Van Wely never even approaches his level of 2000-2001, when he was number 10 in the world with a rating of 2710. This would be 2740 or so nowadays. Piket could have been a top-grandmaster, but he gave up his career for his family.
I'm wondering how far Smeets will reach. He was always seen as not such a great talent as Stellwagen, but he is doing very well lately. And Stellwagen is only playing chess part-time.

That's not that difficult Tom; England is not really a strong chess nation... ;-)
Nevertheless; gaining 22 points in 10 games is a great achievement.

Actually I am imported Dutch myself ... . To continue the NL-UK comparison: The Netherlands are already doing better concerning the average of the ten highest-rated players (2610 vs. 2589). They are also doing better in the U20 age department: England has only David Howell, the Netherlands have at least a number of names born 1989 or later - but I don't think Wouter Spoulman, Roeland Pruijssers, Ali Bitalzadeh or others can still make it into the world top. All hopes on import Anish Giri ... .
And originally I am from Germany, another country that doesn't lack quantity of rated and titled players, but for the last decades (post-Huebner) misses top quality. Hopes are still on Naiditsch [also imported at the age of 11].

I did not known Smeets also is studying...
Maybe that is one of the problems with "our" Dutch players. They do it "on the side". Of course it is smart to have something else you can do if you're not able to make a decent living in chess, but this is not the way to reach the absolute top in my mind.
In a country like the Netherlands, with a lot of great tournaments, it should be possible to "generate" a top-grandmaster at least every 10 years or so.
But, let's count our blessings: Smeets did very well! We had a world champion. Timman was great in his time. And we are living in one of the best places to be in the world! :-)
