He ended the last few rounds with a series of draws but he knew what he was doing. Anand finally won the Morelia/Linares by a full point. With Anand’s last draw today against Ivanchuk, Carlsen could still end shared first but he lost to the number last on the list Leko. Morozevich, who scored -3 in Morelia, managed to achieve a magnificent +4 in Linares by defeating Svidler in the last round – the only loss of the Russian. Topalov and Aronian ended their tournament with a quick draw.[/lang_en]
Eindstand:[/lang_nl][lang_en]The audio of the press conference that was given by Anand right after the tournament can be downloaded here. The most is in Spanish (for those who don’t speak Spanish: unfortunately Anand does, and very well!). After 9 minutes and 12 secondes you can listen to a part in English.
The tournament is the story of Anand and that of Carlsen, and a bit of Morozevich. After a long time Anand will be the world’s number 1 again, on the FIDE rating list of April 1st. Carlsen proved the critics wrong who said that after his result in Wijk aan Zee he didn’t belong in this tournament. He got a fantastic result on his sixteenth. Morozevich did what we’ve seen Topalov doing a few times: he made a terrific comeback. Peter Leko had a disappointing tournament but he had an excuse, since he hadn’t played much chess lately. But… it’s time for the games.
Final standings:[/lang_en]
1. Anand 8,5 2-3. Morozevich, Carlsen 7,5 4-5. Aronian, Svidler 7 6. Ivanchuk 6,5 7-8. Topalov, Leko 6

When you realize that 8.5 is “only” +3, it’s really surprising there was a point difference. But the last round really switched things around for 2-4. Little more can be said about Carlsen and Moro’s result, as well as Topa’s bad fortune, so I won’t bother.
A disappointing finish for Ivanchuk, who started out respectably, although on very short notice, but could not sustain. I hope Linares rewards his decision to take the spot vacated by Radjabov at the last minute with an invite next year.
Anand winning the LINARES tournament is laudable. He deserves it. A genius, he knows the technique of winning tournaments. He deserves to secure the World’s Number One slot, a dream which has been eluding him all these days. My heartiest Congratulations to him.
Congratulations, Vishy. You’re awesome!!
Many congratulations, Vishy!
You have been a tremendous ambassador for the country in the last 10+ years. I am sure you had a cherished dream to be crowned world # 1. Hand in hand, all Indians have wanted you to be crowned world # 1. This is now a proud moment for you and for all of India.
I wish you all the best for the rest of the tournaments in the year, and hope that you will not only retain the world # 1 position for the rest of the year, but also break through the 2825 barrier sometime soon.
Heartiest congratulations once again.
Anand,
Thanks, once again, for letting us all enjoy your progress and play. Growing up in the same colony (Customs Clny: remember?) and just a few gates away, I have been proud that despite all the other ’sports’ getting all the noise, you have truly–in reality–been India’s best sportsman for two decades. Congratulations on getting back up ‘there’ again now, and hope to see the coveted ‘WC’ added to it as well soon.
Twenty-plus years growing up in India, and about equal years outside in the West, you are one person as a human who makes me proud wherever I am. Time and again when I hear your fellow competitors and chess-heads describe you as the ‘most-normal’ or the best human in the top-pack; everyone talks of the Gretzkys and the like but no one gives you your dues. Here are mine!
I hope when our days ‘here’ are past you are spoken off in the same sentence as Tal and Kasparov in the chess world, and arguably as the best human amongst all sportspersons that ever were.
Vaazhga nee, vaLarga un pugazh! My Spanish is pathetic despite being a Californian for long!
So won’t hurt your sentiments there. Best wishes, as always.
Kumar.
Vishy,
Congratulations!!!
I am very proud of you and proud to be Indian.
Your are true sportsman.

Dear Vishy,
I have been a fan of yours for a long time, ever since my dad introduced me to chess at age 6 (which is just a few years ago). When I found out that you won, I was even more proud of my Indian-American heritage. I hope to meet you some day as you are my role model. Congratulations again! Piramathamana velai!
Vikram
Yeah Anand is in a class of his own. I guess his autograph on a 10 dollar bill wouldn’t hurt me either.
Congratulations with your victory Vishy
At the moment I have a few problems of my own.
I can follow the games and predict the moves of the players before they make them (like some other people here on the board) but when I play a game for real, I just lock up and don’t see squad anymore !? And I continiously get forked and checked or loose pieces for no reason at all without getting a piece back ??
I’m going to take some time off maybe that’ll help…
