[lang_nl]Favoriet?[/lang_nl][lang_en]Favorite?[/lang_en]

According to our poll, Magnus Carlsen is the one you'd like to see winning the most, but who has the biggest chance to become the tournament winner?[/lang_en]

[TABLE=147]

[Poll=23]

Ditmaal koos hij iemand anders: "If I have to pick someone I'd say Levon Aronian, who just won in Wijk aan Zee." I've won all three tournaments I've played in this country and I feel very comfortable here. I like everything: the people, the climate, the food, and, above all, the chess fans, who treat me very well."

In ieder geval, klik even niet op die laatste link, give them a break. In plaats daarvan zou je naar het ChessVibes Morelia/Linares Information Centre kunnen gaan.[/lang_nl][lang_en]Morelia/Linares is an eight-player, double round-robin and is held from February 14 till March 8. Participants are Anand, Aronian, Carlsen, Ivanchuk, Leko, Radjabov, Shirov and Topalov.

The first part takes place 14-23 February in the Mexican city of Morelia, after which the players fly to Spain for the second part of the tournament: February 28 - March 8 in Linares. We have good news: ChessVibes will be providing video coverage during the (complete!) Linares part of the tournament.

[TABLE=148]
The rounds will be played at 15:30 hrs local time. In Morelia, this means 16:30 EST | 11:30 GMT | 22:30 CET. In Linares, this means 08:30 EST | 14:30 GTM | 15:30 CET.

[Poll=23]

Perhaps our popularity poll on the far right was a bit unnecessary. We could have guessed ourselves that Magnus Carlsen is highly popular these days, and after his shared victory at Corus, the ChessVibes audience clearly likes to see him win Morelia/Linares as well. But how big are his chances?

Down-to-earth Magnus will probably be satisfied with a modest plus score again. His father Henrik has started blogging from Mexico already and he doesn't talk about Magnus's chances either; instead you can read who is actually training and sponsoring his son.

And if we try to be objective, should we call Anand the favorite to win this tournament, just like he did last year? Or will Aronian repeat his Corus success once and again in the two Spanish speaking countries? It's up to you to decide who's ChessVibes's favorite for Morelia/Linares, since the players themselves don't seem to be sure. Or they act like they're not.

In an interview for Radio Programas del Per?ɬ?, Anand refused to call himself the favorite, just like he did before the World Championship in Mexico. Then he said Kramnik was the favorite, and this time he picked another guy: "If I have to pick someone I'd say Levon Aronian, who just won in Wijk aan Zee." But there's actually no reason Vishy wouldn't be doing very well again, especially since he really feels at home at the tournament: "I've won all three tournaments I've played in this country and I feel very comfortable here. I like everything: the people, the climate, the food, and, above all, the chess fans, who treat me very well." (quoted from Mig's translation).

In an interview with Dagobert Kohlmeyer, for some reason only published at the Spanish Chessbase, Aronian didn't speak about Morelia/Linares, but he did answer Dago's question if he has a favorite piece. Levon said: "I love Tigran Petrosian's response to that question. He answered that the pieces that he liked most, were the ones that could eat the opponent."

And finishing on the theme of favorites, one thing is clear. Mexicans are not our favorite webmasters. The website of the WCC 2007 was a disaster, and the website of the Mexican part of Morelia/Linares is already down before the tournament has started, due to too many visitors. But we shouldn't complain too loudly, because we experienced the same during Corus.

In any case, don't click on that last link for now, give them a break. Instead, you could go to our ChessVibes Morelia/Linares Information Centre.[/lang_en]

Wish Kramnik was there.But he will play at Melody Amber at least.Anand is a favourite here .But if he is too busy in his mind with the future match with Kramnik then he will not win

bobmutch's picture

Yes and Leko almost took the world chess crown from Kramnik in 2004 but Kramnik pulled it off with a win in the 14th game tieing the match at 7 points each. Leko has been 2711 and higher since 2001 and has been in the top ten for a long time. So he is no slouch.

Anand is very humble and modest. He gives credit to others, unlike most of the Russians (e.g., Kramnik or Kasparov). Just for that, I think he would be the most deserving winner. We need good winners, not arrogant winners. Carlsen and Aronian will have their turn. It is time to enjoy Anand's peak.

xtra's picture

does any of the players really like playing on two continents like this?

This has to be the first super tournament with no Russian players participating in a long time. What happend to Morozevich, Svidler, Grischuk?

peter's picture

As I've understood, Kramnik and Morozevich don't like this tournament being played on two continents, but I haven't been able to check this.

Lajos Arpad's picture

Probably not. It's very tiresome.

Lajos Arpad's picture

L?ɬ©k?ɬ? has less chances to win the tournament like Carlsen, Ivanchuk, Radjabov, Shirov and Aronian, although he has more points now? Is he such a weak player compared to the rest of the field?
I agree Anand has more chances than anybody else, because he had beaten Shirov with black, and the other two wins were at the white side of the board.

pete's picture

I think Anand and Carlsen are the big favourites. Topalov might burst into the counts if he manages to avoid stupid losses ... we all know he can win games. Aronian's chances are not to be underestimated too, one loss is not decisive, there are a lot of games ahead and he is in a great form. For me Leko's win was more or less a surprise, maybe Radjabov should have settled down for the draw. Anyway, I would say Leko is last player to win this tournament, like Kramnik he too thinks first not to lose and only then a about the full point. No disrespect to the guy, he is just not my favourite.

Lajos Arpad's picture

I understand that, but don't forget he has won at Wijk aan Zee 2006, Linares 2003, Dortmund 2002, he tied with Kramnik in Brissago 7-7. I think you underestimate him. Aronian won today and Anand lost. Anand and Carlsen have 1-1 points now and Topalov has 1,5 points. I think he certainly has better chances now than Anand, Aronian or Carlsen. I don't know what will be the result in Ivanchuk-L?ɬ©k?ɬ?, but if black wins you should reconsider your favourites ;)

pete's picture

Yes, he is a top player, but seems to be lacking the killer instinct .... not sure, anyway, he is a good guy, but I don't like his chess.

gogomil's picture

All are great players here for sure. Still more likely Anand or my favorite Topalov to win this
