Everybody reports that Motylev was in big trouble against Bologan after losing an exchange and narrowly escaped with a draw. Well, I could be wrong, but my impression is exactly the opposite. I think Motylev was actually playing for a win, although he didn’t need it. Come on, don’t tell me he walked into that pin on the e-file by accident! It seems much more likely that he sacrificed the exchange to get at White’s kingside pawns and figured he would have good chances in the ensuing race. Not a bad judgement – if anyone was lucky to escape with a draw by hair’s breadth, it was Bologan. Check out 48…Be6!? as a winning attempt for Black. The idea is to either deflect White’s bishop from the long diagonal or to control the g8-square. 49.Bxe6 g2 50.Rg8 and now 50…h2 is possible. White’s only chance might be 49.Rd8 Bxd5 50.Rxd5 g2 51.Rxd4+ Ke3 52.Re4+! Kxe4 53.a7 g1Q 54.a8Q+ and he might have a perpetual, but I’m not sure.
