Five rounds have been played at the British Championship, and top seeded player Michael Adams is the only one left with a perfect score. Nicholas Pert, Daniel Gormally, Jovanka Houska and Adam Hunt are trailing by a full point.
The event’s full name is the “97th British Championships of the British Isles”, and it takes place 25 July to 7 August at the Sports Centre of the University of Kent in Canterbury, England.
The main event is an 11-round Swiss with a possible play-off in the case of a tie for first place. There are several side events, such as senior and junior championships, rapidplay and a weekender.
The rate of play in the main event is 100 minutes for 40 moves, then 50 minutes for 20 moves and then 15 minutes for the remaining moves with 30 seconds increment from move 1. The first prize is £5,000 (6,013 Euros). The games start at 14.15 local time, 15.15 CET. The games are transmitted live with a five-minute delay and can be followed with expert commentary. Top seed and absolute favourite Michael Adams is still on a perfect score after five rounds, but will meet tougher competition in the remaining six rounds. Thus far the Englishman defeated FM Robert Eames (2287), GM Aaron Summerscale (2428), IM Richard Pert (2460), IM Jack Rudd (2236) and FM Alexei Slavin (2417) relatively easily.

isn’t Andrew Martin an IM?
Thx, corrected.
I don’t see who would be the “tougher” competition There’s no one else rated even 2600 and Adams is over 2700. Too bad Nigel isn’t playing…
Is the game Adams vs Rudd complete? Because I don’t really see why black would give up in the final position. I agree his position is bad but still, might wanne try a bit longer to see what happens. Or maybe he flagged?
Thx for reporting this tournament also chessvibes…
easy money for Mickey. He’s different gravy to this shower of chess tourists.
Adams is a really powerful player. But he seems to maintained a lower profile after the Hydra beat him 5.5 to 0.5 in a match he didn’t prepared for.
This tournament should be good for him. He’s crushing the opposition like bugs beneath his heel, while they’re desperately trying to hold on for a draw. After he wins the British title maybe he will play in some top tournaments.
Does someone know how download the videos which are shown in the above page?
Well, with all the interesting players there are, I´d say it takes something more than this to receive invitations. For example, I wouldn´t be surprised if Le received more invitations than Adams at this point, but this happens all the time, maybe if Adams is in really good shape he can show in some team competition (Spanish league? He usually plays for Linex Magic, otherwise probably in the Olympiad).
By itself, the title of British champion probably won’t lead to future invitations for Adams – given the strength of the field (or lack thereof), it’s worth less than, for example, his win at the Gibraltar Open!? More important may be that his rating again approaches the low- to mid-2700’s (current live rating 2726, including the first three rounds of the British Championship) after it had dropped below the magic 2700 for a while.
Regarding team competitions, he plays plenty of them: Spanish league, German Bundesliga, French team competition, Turkish league … and indeed also the British 4NCL.
