Play against Karpov, or the Russian team, online

Chess fans have the opportunity to play against Anatoly Karpov, or the entire Russian Team, online. (Russian) fans vs Russian Team

This year it is 175 years ago that a famous correspondence game between the first Russian chess master Alexander Petrov and three chess players from St. Petersburg took place. According to chess historians, this was the first corresponence chess game played in Russia. It is also because of this game that the moves 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 are known as the "Petrov" or "Russian" defence.

In honor of the anniversary of this famous game, the Russian Chess Federation organizes a correspondence game between the Russian chess team (consisting of Peter Svidler, Alexander Grischuk, Sergey Karjakin and Evgeny Tomashevsky) and the Russian fans. The match is currently under way at a specially created website where each day a new move from the Russian national team is announced. The fans can register at the site and send in their moves, and the move that gets most votes is played.

The game started on Monday, June 25th and the fans got the white pieces. They can choose their moves within 12 hours, each day between 15:00 and 03:00 Moscow time. The Russian national team is pondering over their replies between 03:00 and 15:00 hrs. They were invited to go for a Petrov, after the moves 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3, but instead the Russian team went for the Berlin: 2...Nc6 3.Bb5 Nf6 4.0-0 Nxe4, which is where the game is at the moment of writing.

Karpov vs (French) fans

It's summer time, which means a number of big sport events are taking place. One of these is the Tour de France. On Friday, July 21st, the 19th stage will be a race against the clock over 53,5 km from Bonneval to Chartres. Special guest will be Anatoly Karpov.

On this occasion, Europe-Echecs is organizing a challenge to play against the 12th World Chess champion online. The principle is similar to the one above, with a time control of one move per day. Karpov will start the game with white pieces.

Also for this game you need to register, and the move voted the most will be chosen and played against Karpov. The game will last during the Tour de France, so it starts on Saturday, June 30th and finishes Sunday, July 22nd. The question is whether Karpov will manage to win before the arrival on the Champs Elysées...
